A simple question, hope this is an appropriate forum:

I finally decided to definitely go with a Canon S3 for my main digital camera. We've listed it as a gift on our wish-list for my upcoming wedding. The question is, if I don't intend to get into actual movie-making at any point, is there any reason I'd care about getting a specialized video camcorder? I understand that the Canon S3 has the annoying 1GB video limit, but I could still theoretically manage recording a concert video by just cutting between songs. I would mainly use video for recording concerts and recitals, and maybe music rehearsals to see how I'm doing. Will I be fine with just the S3? Is there any reason to add to the wish list some specialized video camera if I don't otherwise plan to really get into movie making?

Thanks for the help.

The deal breakers are going to be whether you want high-res movies, or a LOT of storage space. Some of the video cameras out there now come with 30-60gb capacities. You will be limited to 640x480 resolution which IMO is perfect for internet sharing but if you want to optimize for home viewing you can go higher for a sharper image. As far as sound goes I don't know how they compare, but the S3 records in stereo sound, unlike pretty much any other digital camera out there. Finally, some of the good ones have an enormous zoom - in the realm of 35x. Whether you need it or not, is up to you.

For me, I'm perfectly content with my 12x, stereo sound 640x480 Canon S3.
