The D50 manual states that you can use SD cards up to 1GB. However, I use a Sandisk Ultra II 2GB card in mine that works just fine. SD cards of 4GB and above are a slightly different format, and are called SDHC (High Capacity). These I believe are not compatible with our D50s, but I assure you, you can get plenty of pictures on a 2GB card. I usually shoot .jpeg fine, and get around 700 pictures before it fills up.

I use a 4gb RiDATA card in my D50 and I've yet to have a single problem with it.

8GB cards are SDHC. SDHC will not work in a D50.
Anything over 2GB is dicing with trouble on a D50 because the camera only supports FAT not FAT32 file formats internally. You can use standard SD cards up to 4GB provided they are formatted as FAT32 outside the camera. You will have problems is there is any sort of file corruption while the card is in the camera.

The manual is a "cover our ass manual" plus it was written before the larger SD cards were available
