I lost my Canon Powershot A630 on the first day in Italy! Luckily, my friend lent me his Casio Exilim for part of the trip, and when I got home I found it took very good pictures, and I was impressed with all the scene modes.

However, I am kind of emotionally attached to Canon, as I took tons of great, great pictures with my A630, so I was looking at the Canon Powershot SD550 at Amazon, which has less MP than my old camera but all the same scene modes that I love, and is smaller to boot (a priority for me). I happened to come across my friend's Elixim, though, which has 10 MP, a lot more Scene Modes, it was nearly the same price.

My immediate thought was to get the camera that had 10 MP over the one that had 7.1, but I don't know if more MP automatically equals a better camera. I have seen a lot of amazing shots people have taken with the SD550, and not as many with the EZ-Z1000...plus, the Z1000 recieved slightly lower scores on other camera reviewing websites compared to the SD500.

I liked the Exilim, but I found my old Canon was generally better at Colors, and I don't know if the Best Shot modes are as effective as Canon's Scene Modes. On the other hand, the Exilim has an anti-shake feature I really like. But color reproduction, especially light and shading and different blues and greens, are very important to me.

If anyone has any opinion on the two cameras, I'd really appreciate them. I'm generally not willing to go higher than 270, and I know that they are both good deals for both cameras. Are the Best Shot modes on the Exilim just post-picture effects or coloring added to the picture, or do they actually affect the capturing of the picture like the Powershot's Scene Modes?

Thank you for any help!

P.S As for the questionaire, I would like an ultracompact that is under $310, so I think I have it narrowed down to these two. I am a new photography student, but I have a manual and can borrow my parents' DSLR for really good shots, so I'd just like this as a very portable camera that I can still take very good shots with when I come across them.
