Hi folks, I would greatly appreciate some guidance on which camera would suit my needs:

Budget

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible.

I would prefer not to go over 400 but am somewhat flexible.

Size

* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?

Would prefer something fairly portable but does not necessarily have to be tiny.

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you?

Any camera on today's market has more then enough megapixels for me.

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x, Other - Specify)

at least 3-4 x more would be nice.

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)

9+

Do you care for manual controls?

At the moment I would probably use auto, but it would be a plus if eventually I could start to play around a little.

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for?

Portraits, vacations, social events

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?

occasionally

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?

At least some of the time.

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?

No.

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate?

No, although I've seen some very nice results from some canons, I'm open to any brand that could give me nice results.

Are there particular models you already have in mind?

No

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)

Non of the above is an absolute must, Image Stabilization and to a lesser extent Rotating LCD would be nice.

i would stick with the canons.
you might want to check out the canon A710, with an Image Stabilizer and the canon G7, also with Image Stabilizer

If you could do without the image stabilizer you should check out the powershot a640, it's got tons of features (including the swivel screen) and image quality is as good as you'll get from a portable camera.

Thanks so much for the help, can anyone give me a brief overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the a640 vs the other 2 that were recommended (the G7 and a710)?
