I have read many posts on this topic, however some are older and refer to the SD900 as being $100 more than the SD 800 IS. I have looked around and found the SD900 for $344 and the SD800 IS for $334. So my question is now that the prices have come down and they have been out for a while is the SD 800 IS still the one to get? I am looking for a small camera for taking family pictures indoor with flash and at the beach in bright sunlight. If you have either camera, I would love to hear real world experience.
Also, any thoughts on when the next versions are coming out, a SD900 with IS maybe.
Thanks!

The main advantage of the SD900 is 10 MP, which is complete overkill for family snapshots. And, it doesn't have IS. Still a no brainer.

I haven't used the SD800, but I had the SD700IS, and now have the SD900. There is a difference in the overall image quality between the two. It's not huge, but the SD900 definitely produces pics with higher clarity. If the higher image quality is not that important to you, you would probably be fine with the SD800, especially if you think you need the IS and a wider angle lens. I just personally like the extra sharpness and clarity of the SD900, and I haven't missed the lack of the IS on it. Here is a photo album of shots from my recent Italy trip, taken with the SD900. I am very pleased with SD900's performance:

I used to have the SD700, until the SD800 Came out. Luckily I was within the return policy and exchanged the SD700 for the SD800. Well.. goes to show you that newer isn't always better.
The SD800 was actually worst than the SD700 in terms of picture quality, for me the difference is VERY noticeable. After trying out the camera for about a week and several hundred pictures later, I returned it.
Bought the SD900 when it came out and never looked back since.
A lot of people say 10MP is overkill for a small camera, but as far as picture quality goes, it is top notch.
If you HAVE to have IS, then go with the SD700, better indoor low light stability. The only thing the SD800 is good for if anything is the wide angle lens. Unless you are on the edge of a cliff, the wide angle lens doesn't have much use; just take a few steps back, no biggie :)
I vote go with the SD900.
