hey there, i recently bought an eos rebel xt. i have been tampering with the long exposure i have gotten to the setting of 22 seconds but is there anyway i can go longer. ive heard that with some cameras you can do it up to 30 minutes but i would like to do it for a couple of minutes any insight would be great. thanks

Go here http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&fcategoryid=215&modelid=11154 and then in Downloads click on Product/Software Manuals and in the next window download the instruction manual and go to page 93 of the manual and you will find your answer plus many more future questions or set your mode dial to M and then set shutter speed to "Bulb".

I believe the eos rebel xt, like most dSLRs can use exposure times lasting as long as the battery has power (a couple of hours) using the Bulb mode.
When using Bulb Mode it is best to use a remote for your camera to open the shutter and close it when you want the exposure to end. Keeping the shutter button pressed is not recommendable, since it will induce vibrations making the picture less sharp. Alternatively, you could tie a piece of elastic chord around your grip keeping the shutter pressed. This method will give some vibrations at the beginning and end of the exposure, but with long exposures (say, 30 seconds and longer) the effect of this is neglicable.
