I would like to shoot infrared and wonder if the Canon Rebel XT can be fitted with a Hoya R 72 filter to do this?

The standard test is to take a TV remote and aim it at the camera. While continuously pressing any button on the remote take a photo of the remote with the camera. If the camera is reasonably IR sensitive the LED on the remote will show up as a bright spot. Obviously do this test in a not overly bright environment.

Thanks for the interesting info. Here are the results from my Rebelxt with kit lens.

Well, it is still IR sensitive like most digitals. This is actually one area where digital point & shoots have the advantage over DSLRs. With a P & S camera you can put an IR filter in front of the lens and live preview still works. You can compose and meter like normal. With a DSLR, just like the old film SLR days, the IR filter in front of the lens makes the optical view finder useless.

There are lots of good digital IR web sites to get some starter info. But make certain you have a tripod as exposures could be in the 1/2 second range or longer.
