is there any way to convert a 4:3 picture to widescreen without screwing it up?

Don't change the resolution of the whole photo. Use "crop" with the correct aspect ratio settings that you want.

Not without distorting the image.

Sure, you just crop off the top and bottom, that's all the cameras do anyway.

Two already said: yes you can, just crop it.

And that is true, just cut off the right amount from top and bottom. That is all there is to 16:9.

In photoshop, do it like this:
Lets say you have an 800x600 pixel photo (4:3).

Go to menu: Image/Canvas Size...

Select pixels as measure.

calculate:
800 / 16 = 50
50 x 9 = 450

Type in for Height: 450

There you have it, a perfect 16:9 photo without distortion.

Sure, you just crop off the top and bottom, that's all the cameras do anyway. For the Panasonic LX1 and LX2 cameras, the sensor is built with a "native" 16:9 ratio, and other aspect ratios like 3:2 and 4:3 are then cropped from the full-image 16:9 capture. The Panasonic TZ2/TZ3 cameras offer "uncropped" images in all 3 aspect ratios, by varying the "capture rectangle" according to the selected aspect ratio. In other words, while other cameras produce reduced-MP images in anything other than their "native" aspect ratio, (e.g., my 8MP FZ30 gives 5.5MP images shooting in 16:9) the TZ2/TZ3 cameras uniquely give the same number of pixels for any selection, i.e., 7.1MP for the TZ3.

yes but croping cuts out part of the image and i dont want to do that. not to mention after the crop it will be smaller then i need. i should have been more specific and said converting without cropping.
