So I know the major differences.

The Canon is 8 mega pixel, the Nikon 6.1
Th Canon has a faster shutter speed (3 frames per second vs 2.5)
The Canon has auto focus, the Nikon you need an auto-focus lense

None of those things worry me. I am ok with 6.1 MP, and the slightly slower shutter speed, and buying only auto-focus lenses.

For us, the biggest selling point so far is the larger lcd screen on the back of the Nikon D40 so we can better see our pictures when we take them.

Does anyone know of any other major differences between the two, or know of any major problems with the Nikon D40.

This will be our first SLR, with the first major use of it will be on our honeymoon for 3 weeks in Thailand. So we would like something simple for those of us used to point and shoot (who really want to get into SLR) that is not too heavy to lug around.

Well the problem isn't "autofocus" but that you need to use AF-S lenses (not screw focus AF lenses) which make up a lot of nikon's lineup.

I don't know how big price factors into your choices but I'd be looking at XTi or D80 over XT and D40. AF is far superior on D80/XTI and more feature rich.

D80 has a very nice viewfinder and commander mode flash (and generally better flash system) XTI has anti dust mode and slighty better high ISO.
