Unless you get your hands on the "pre-AI" (whatever that means) F-mount lens, you will be mostly compatible with old lenses... IOW you can stick them on, and AF will work. The D80 might have some metering disability with certain lenses. Here is a good body comparison chart that includes the lens compatibility: http://www.bythom.com/currentdslr.htm

If you give specific lens info, we would be able to let you know if they are compatible.

Seriously, does anyone know if there is a comprehensive chart that list all the prefixes and what they mean for each of the popular brands like Nikon, Sigma Tamron.. etc..

I read on description, but forget the next day... would be great if there is a quick reference chart somewhere...

Yes. Pretty much ALL nikon lenses hook right up to the D80. The non-CPU lenses (look in your owners manual!!) do not communicate with the camera very well. You have to manually set your f-stop on the lense and then guess your shutter speed. White balance doesn't work either so you'll need to re-adjust that later in a program. I have a bunch of non-CPU lenses (price was right: free) and they are fun to play with but not very practical.

Other than those, yes, every popular Nikon lense and all other aftermarket lenses are 100% compatible with the D80. Check your owners manual for the definitions on all the random letters.

The similarity with the lenses is that they are all fast lenses....for creatvity! Also very nice lenses apparently
