I want into camera world yesterday to get a ST-E2. All of the guys that worked at the store were Nikon guys so I decided to check one out. First thing I noticed was I like the grip on my Canon better and the nikon felt kinda awkward, but that may be because I am used to my canon. I am not going to list all the things that I liked about Nikon, honestly because there are too many  but there are some that I really did like and I can see why people really like their Nikons! Honestly I was tempted to go rent one yesterday and I still think I may rent a D200 or nicer Nikon some time in the future to get some hands on. Just wanted to share because I was such a Canon stickler before now. :(

I am a nikonian and I was messing around with my friends 30D the other day. I tell you what, its a solid piece of equipment. If I was gonna go Canon, I'd do the 30D.
That said, I love my D70s. To me, it kinda seems like camera technology has reached a plateau right now. The new stuff doesn't seem to be much better than last years model. Sure, a bigger LCD screen but I hardly use mine. I plan on wearing my D70s out, and then sending it in under warranty and then wearing it out again.
Other than the 30D, I really don't know whats going on over in the Canon campsite. I am not too terribly impressed with the rebels but a lot of my friends use them with excellent results. I guess it all comes back down to the photographer and not the equipment.

Honestly as far as canon DSLRs are concerned, I think the rebels are junk compared to the 10D, 20D, 30D, 5D, and 1D series.
As far as new technology ISO 6400 and 10FPS will soon be available in the 1D MKIII.
Cant wait for that!!!

What you have to understand is that Canon and Nikon market toward two different markets. Canon markets more toward sports/action photographers whereas Nikon markets towards nature photographers. My forte is sports photography, so I chose Canon for their 5 fps, better high ISO, and they have an arsenol of lenses that are professional quality and don't completely break the bank.
Had I been a professional nature photographer, I would have gone with Nikon because I wouldn't need to utilize high ISO. Nikon has great consumer lenses but they just don't fit my needs. That said, the D200 is amazing and I almost bought it but it was slightly out of my price range and the 30D performed better with ISO. It seems to me that Nikon has a button for everything and that's what attracted me. I'm fine with my 30D and it gets the job done well.

pagnamenta,
If the Nikon D200 at 5fps was slightly out of your price range, just what professional quality lenses were/are in your price range for sports? I also checked out the Canon 30D and 5D, but preferred the feel of the D200. And when I checked both Nikonusa and Canonusa websites, the Nikon D200 was rated at 22 Raw and 37 jpg, while the Canon 30D was rated at 11 Raw and 30 jpg. To me, that seems like a very large difference, especially if one is shooting RAW. Myself, I'm also not into shooting with an F4 lens at 1600 ISO for sports.
That arena gives you beautiful space to take shots under the hoop. I wish my arenas were that deep, I am forced to use my 24-105 f4 under the net at ISO 1600.
