Obviously this lens looks like a killer bang for the buck.. however all documentation says it will only work with DX format cameras like the d40, 80 and 200. Does this mean it won't work in any way shape or form with my d50? Or is it something simple like no autofocus, etc.

DX is a notation for digital cameras that have the crop factor, you just could not use this lens on any camera that is full frame. Should work fine on your D50.

Exactly. it will work with ANY Nikon mount camera that has an 1.5x crop factor 'APS-C' size sensor. Like the D100. D200, D70, D70s, D50, D40, D40x, D80, D2X, D2Xs, D2H, Fuji Pro S3, Fuji Pro S2, Fuji Pro S5.

DX is Nikon speak for APS-C image circle.
Canon speak: EF-S
Tamron speak: Di II
Sigma speak: DC
Tokina speak: DX (copy cats!)

Thanks very much :) Looks like it's time to get on the pre-order list.

Hi everyone,

I did not see this thread and just posted a question in another thread here:
http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?p=207401#post207401

Basicly, I have a D40 and am looking to add an entry level zoom lens. I want to know if anyone has tried the new 55-200 f/4-5.6 AF-S VR lens yet. Is it similar technology to the slightly more expensive 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 VR? The Nikon website lists the 55-200 as having one ED element, while the 70-300 VR and the 18-200 VR each have two ED elements. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

It might be a little early to know yet. I personally like to do more research, and try out a lens before I make a decision. However, if you get on a waiting list at a local store, chances are that you can still try before you buy, since the next guy is just waiting to buy yours. You might even ask them to let you know as soon as they get one in, even if it isn't your turn because you just want to mount it on your camera and see if you really want it.

That is a great suggestion, I will certainly try it out first. thanks

So far it looks like the lens uses the old VR system (3 stops vs. 4 in the new VR II). The jury is still out on the number of blades (9 vs. 7 - even different Nikon sites list different numbers). I expect it to have faster AF and be a little sharper than the old one, and I hope the redesign did not have a negative impact on the good optical qualities of the old one (especially wrt. bokeh and CA). I plan to get one as soon as they hit the stores (end of March?).
