I have been playing with my new D50 but have a problem.

I set the camera to automatic and took a couple of photos, different static subjects in raw format. I downloaded the photos onto my laptop and they were superb. I then took the same photos again but this time in manual using the same settings and the quality of the results are different though the settings are identical. One is lighter and the other darker.

I tried again in auto mode and the results are as the first set.

I am obviously doing something wrong but cannot figure out what.

Any advice much appreciated.

Did you have the flash on in auto, and did you remember to check the ISO in manual. Because auto, automatically raises or lowers the ISO depending on where you are shooting, and manual you have to do it manually.

Maybe post the EXIF data for the automatic photo, and the EXIF data for the manual photo, so we can see if there is anything that is different between the two.

post the EXIF data ...agreed.

I think Auto ISO works in Manual mode as well, at least I am pretty sure that I had to shut that off on my D70s since it was really fooling me at first.

There has to be a difference in the settings... If you can post the EXIF info, we can help you figure out what is causing the difference

Don't the "extra" setting take over in manual as well, like Saturation and those values, where they are set by the camera in full auto?
