The 28-300mm is the first time TAMRON’s independently engineered VC (Vibration Compensation) has been integrated and released in a production lens. “The AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC (Model A20)” can be used equally well on both 35mm-film SLR, Full-frame sensor DSLR and APS-C sensor DSLR cameras. When place on an APS-C sensor, the effective range goes from 43-465mm*

(*) TAMRON bases this on a DFC of 1.55x

1. The VC ("Vibration Compensation" which TAMRON developed independently) mechanism is composed of a 3-axial control structure which arranges 3-pairs of drive coils and a ball that slides around the correcting lens. Responsiveness improves due to the fact that supports of the correcting lens are just rolling against the friction of the ball, and because the structure is simple, the compact conversion of the lens itself has become possible. In addition, the high accuracy of the gyro sensor is translated to the sensor, which analyzes the handshake or blurring, and immediately compensates for the shake by use of a "32-bit RISC CPU".

2. Constructed with cutting-edge TAMRON elements- elements of XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass, Hybrid Aspherical lens elements, and an element of LD glass, which decreases magnification ratio chromatic aberration and axial overtone aberration (abnormality dispersion) – this piece of technology inherits TAMRON’s tradition of premium image quality and compact size. The special internal surface coatings eliminate ghosting and flare that can show up when using a DLSR, with various photographic scenes.

3. The minimum focal distance for all focal lengths is 0.49m (19 in). It’s magnification ratio is 1:3 .

4. The lens has a ghost flare coating throughout its length, to hold down the reflectivity of the inner surfaces.

5. Comparing the AF 28-300 VC (Model A20) to the current AF28-300mm (Model A061), the VC-addition makes it 5mm longer and increases the largest diameter by 17.8 mm.

6. The "zoom lock" feature has carried over to prevent lens extention while carrying.

7. The star hood had a superior shade characteristic. It protects from harmful light rays which shine into the lens from an outside angle of view. It is included as a standard accessory item with the lens.

Specifications:

The SP AF70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro (Model 001) is highly anticipated new telephoto addition to the well-received and very popular SP AF28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD (IF) for the 35mm film or full-frame sensor. It has a much closer (0.95m) minimum focus distance at all focal lengths and magnification ratio of 1:3.1 at 200mm. The internal focusing system has been improved to reduce lens stress during auto and manual focus. The lens is totally compatible on the APS-C sensor, providing an effective 109-310mm* focal length.

(*) DCF = 1.55x

1. The minimum focus distance is now 0.95m for all focal lengths, with a magnification ratio 1:3.1 @ 200mm and f/2.8 aperture. Through the elemental design of the optic group, TAMRON was able to keep the overall lens barrel diameter down to 77mm.

2. Chromatic aberration is likely to be reproduced in an image as color blur or color shift. On-axis chromatic aberration in particular, that can be a problem in ultra telephoto lenses, causes color blur in the center of an image. This zoom lens features LD (Low Dispersion) elements made of special glass materials that have low dispersion indices to confine dispersion of spectra, a cause of chromatic aberrations, to the absolute minimum, and provides sharp and clear images.

3. This powerful ultra telephoto zoom lens weighs a mere 1112.6 grams (39.7 oz.)* through the use of engineering plastic materials for parts that compose the main barrel that provide strength sufficient for industrial applications, yet offer dimensional stability. The tripod mount, detachable in one touch, is made of aluminum that reconcile light-weight and high rigidity, resulting in enhanced balance and ease of use in hand-held shooting.
(*) Weight without the removable tripod mount.

4. The interior elements have been properly coated to prevent ghost flare reflection.

5. AF and MF are now mutually exclusive, where the manual focusing ring will disengage during AF operation to avoid grip-slippage during the focus operation. Also, the total outer lens length does not change during focus.

6. The aluminum tripod mount is completely removal and provides a rigid grip for the lens.

7. The star hood had a superior shade characteristic. It protects from harmful light rays which shine into the lens from an outside angle of view. It is included as a standard accessory item with the lens.

Specifications:
Model Name : A001
Focal Length : 70-200mm
Maximum Aperture : F/2.8

Hmm...

I knew that lens looked familiar!
http://www.sigmaphoto.com/images/LensesImage/145_small.jpg
Seems like Tamron has done it again... quite faithfully copying a Sigma design, including a "macro" feature.
It is not at all as light as you once predicted, Don, nor is it an APS-C lens (Di, not Di II).

Basically a "me too!" lens from Tamron, next to the 80-200 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 lenses from Canon, Minolta, Nikon and Sigma.

In case you wondered what the "Tamron has done it again" was about, have a look at this:

http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/assets/images/a16_1750diII.gif
tamron 17-50 f2.8 Di II

At least Tamron decided to let the zoom ring go the other way around (how nice! ).

Coldy- I think you are all wrong on this one. The Tamron that Don posted is a horizontal lens, the Sigma that you posted is clearly vertical.;)

Did you happen to see the MINIMUM FOCAL DISTANCE?

We are talking 3 feet (0.95 m), here.

It is simply unprecidented for a 70-200mm lens. Sigma is at 100 cm. Edge -> TAMRON. (Hey, you have to have something nifty to point at. ;) )

The best you can get out of the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is 4.3 feet (1.3m)

Hey Don--Did you use an online translator on those press releases? They read like stuff produced by my lowest skilled students.:D

So uhmmmm
Basically the SAME as the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX DG Macro?

You'll have to excuse me, but I do not recall saying "Di-II" for this one. I anticipated it would be competing with the Canon and Sigma 70-200s.

I had hoped they'd toss in the "VC" compensation, but you are getting a carload of other goodies in this offering. Maybe next time.

You are right about the weight, though ... it's at 2.45 lbs or 39.2 ounces. Guess they all have their shortfalls, but that's still 12 ounces less than my Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM (52 oz).

Anyway, step-up ... because now you can. Three feet away and you are THERE! :D

Yep, Japanese in not one of my strengths ... processed it quick ... so, it's fresh from the Babel fish. Nick' me five full points for trying to get the news out there and not massaging it.

By the way, thanks for stepping up and noticing.

What does it offer that Canon or Sigma lack? All three have build quality (I would assume), f/2.8, and include hoods. Canon's got USM and undisputed IQ, Sigma's got HSM and close focusing. Tamron's got close focusing like Sigma but what kind of focus motor do they have? Did they come up with a USM of some sort? I have a headache so I don't want to read the entire release.

Don, I'm not selling the darn things :p ... I just thought I'd get the word out ... that they had been announced, since no one else had.

I'm more interested in the lens for the SONY A100, not mounting on the Canon. Tokina seems to have turned its back to SONY & Pentax (not too sure why ... licensing, maybe), and selling only Nikon and Canon mounts.

The TAMRON is, "out-of-the-box", adding SONY to it's list of mounts.

SONY's (Minolta's) G 70-200mm f/2.8 was looking like $1800.00

I need a "good" alternative.

Also, pricing needs to be set ... didn't see anything on that, yet.

Enjoy ... :)

BTW: When you popping for that SIGMA 200-500 f/2.8? Now were talking grabbing some light, eh? :D

For Sony you have the amazing and expensive Minolta 80-200 f2.8 already! It probably beats all other 70-200 f2.8's optically... and has a silent motor too (SSM?).

So, if you want a lens like that on your Sony, first look at the awesome Minolta! And it is REAL WHITE!

I asked because I struggled with it for a few minutes, thinking that I was just being dense, before I realized it was from the Japanese press release. Then I felt a little less dense.;) But you get extra credit for turning your work in early.;)

Okay ... I went back and dolled up both the 28-300mm VC & 70-200mm f/2.8 Press Releases into something a bit more ... lucid. It may not be a 100%, but it's close. Just buy the lens and you'll see ... quite literally.

LOL ... enjoy! :D

Not sure why 13 groups is considered "best", lol!
And that f32? Ever seen what that does to the resolution of the camera? Diffraction nightmare...

So, it is the longest, widest, least sturdy one, huh? :D

I'd say the lightest & closest 70-200mm-type lens "close-up" you can get. But, that's just me, Mr. DeMille ... :D

Guess we will all have to wait for Rex914's or Jeff's "2007 Red-carpet PMA Lens Review" ... get the popcorn ... and hit the lights!
