Try this, put the focus ring on 85mm and try to turn it a lil by 1mm, left, right, forward, up, without moving from 85mm. see if it feels slightly loose

I have just purchased a brand new "EF-S 17-85mm F/4-5.6 IS USM" lenses for my Canon XT. It actually feels more like vibrations than tilts.

Why am i worried, because im wondering is something broken or loose inside, or is this normal and common in lenses. I mean i just purchased it from a newly arrived stock and i'm SURE no one touched it before me.

Is this normal or am i just paranoid, I should be, it's my newest lens. Does anyone have or has had similar situation?

not sure, but did you mean the zoom ring? what exactly are you concerned about -- is it sliding on its own when you hold the lens in different positions in the air?

maybe you can check the exif of the image and see if it's not exactly at 85mm when it should be, that should tell you if there's a serious problem. if it's just not entirely progressively smooth when zooming, it's probably normal (my experience).

Return it, get your money back, buy an L. You're too paranoid for consumer lenses.

PS: I was only being slightly tongue-in-cheek. I really do think you need L glass because you apparently won't be happy with the build of anything less. I don't think you're out and out paranoid but if you go for the good stuff right away you won't have to post anymore of these types of threads.

Well if I'd just paid good money for that lens and I thought there might be something wrong with it I'd be raising the roof off the place I bought it. Perhaps if you've got a local camera store that sells those you could go in and ask to see the display model and mentally compare how yours feels compared to the one in your hand.
