i went with a friend to his motocross races...35 degrees outside by the way. and had a really tough challenge. i ended up shooting ISO 3200 at 2.8 and underexposing a bit just to get to 1/200s. overall had a good time.

on top of that, most of these pictures are very cropped.

as always, c&c please.

i'm lovin the background blur

this guy actually didn't wreck on this one. i was surprised.

now for the hard part..i wish i had zoomed more on some of these because i ended up cropping them quite a bit.

Wow, you got some great shots! I love #2 and #3. I think the unusual composition of #2 works. Even though the rider is moving out of the frame, we expect him to, because he is racing! (She?) And it's hard to zoom in too close on action. The subject is just moving too fast. Wow, #3 has the fastest SS I've ever seen! I guess it wasn't really very dark outside? You created the silhouette for dramatic effect? I like it!

I like the 2nd photo, very dynamic and the contrast with the voilent action in the front and the serenity of the brackgound is very nice.

The noise in the dark photos is killing though... use a noise filter before you resize, the resizing method seems to favour the wrongfully coloured noise pixels.

good shots..

the ISO3200 doesnt seems so good, why is that? (i know it's high iso that is why there is digital noise) but the 30D can output better quality in 3200, espesially when it being resized (the image of course).

Whenever i shoot 1600 or 3200 i always run some noise reduction on it. I don't mind the grain but that color noise does get in the way. Just use photoshops standard noise reduction filter and turn everything all the way down except "remove color noise" and all it'll do is take out that nasty color noise but leave the grain (which as i've said, i don't mind.) If you're shooting raw just process the raw file with photoshop and you can pull all the color noise while you process the raw with the little slider under the details tab.

thanks for the tip bonji...i reuploaded the sixth one with the color noise reduction.

the reason there was so much noise isn't just because it was at ISO 3200. i underexposed the images by upping my shutter sped from 1/160s to 1/200s so after correcting for the underexposure the noise was pretty much doubled. on top of that, alot of these shots are 40-50% crops.

yes i used the little * button to expose for the sky and recomposed. when i saw that guy standing there i thought it would look cool if he and a rider would be silhouetted. i should have cranked down the aperture but it still worked out the way i wanted it to.

Nice going, and very well done! Glad to see us Texans making a good showing on the forum, especially with something as tough as night action shots. :p

yay, motocross!! I see you have gotten over your 'high ISO phobia'! Great stuff. noise.... what noise.:D
