Hello
Are there any educational websites or beginner photography books that are recommended?
Thank you

If you're wanting to learn about the theory/craft of photography in general, you should just google for probable expressions like "photography tutorial." They are legion, and you can probably learn something from each one. Or is there something specific about dSLRs that you want to know?

Well, I'm looking to learn from the beginning. I would say I'm on a DSLR for Dummies kind of level.

I'm still not sure what you're looking for. Is it photography in general, or the Digital Single Lens Reflex (dSLR) type of camera that you need information about? All photography is about light, so if it's basic photographic techniques and concepts you need help with, I'd try googling for "photography tutorial" like I said earlier. If it's just the mechanical information about a certain type of camera (dSLR) that you need, then the question is different.

Hey, if you stop by a Barnes and Noble or simliar book store and look at PC Magazine's "Digital SLR Photography Solutions" book. It covers a wide range of topics, and has great color photos and information. Other than that, as mentioned before, you should be able to find something by typing into a search engine. Also, just browsing through these forums should provide a lot of information. Good luck.

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson has helped me tons. I knew nothing when I first got my DSLR in December (didn't even know what DSLR stood for :p ). But that book was recommended to me by several folks. I googled and learned about aperture, shutter speed and ISO on the internet, but that book really tied everything together.
There is a free photo course on the web. If you do not want to enroll, you can just read the lessons. I read a few of the lessons. They are as good or better than some books.

Ya, I was going to suggest Bryan Peterson's books too. He has a few that are really worth reading. I don't know how much of a beginner you are though. It's worth at least knowing how your camera works first, then read about the photography later. Best advice to learn about your camera is, yes of coarse read about it, but most importantly, use it. The best way to learn is to just keep shooting making mental notes about what works and what doesn't. Have fun!:D

I forgot to mention, once you start shooting, post your pics here and you should get lots of advice from many many great photographers in this forum. Remember that all critisism is given to help you grow and not meant as an insult. Listen to what people here have to say, like I said, there are many very good photographers here that will help you loads.

Is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson good for complete novice to both DSLRs and photography? I don't know how to use manual settings on my DSLR but would like to - have no idea about aperature, shutter speed, light, etc. Complete newbie but eager to learn. I also need something that's not to technical or verbose either - maybe a class might be a better option.

It's a good starting point. I was already using manual controls before the read so some of it was review and some was new.
