After asking a lot of questions about tripods and t/c, I went and ordered from B&H a Bogen/Manfrotto 3021BPro with the 3265 pistol grip head and a Kenko 300 Pro t/c.
Nasty day here- Severe Tstorms and a tornado a little north of us, so I can only play with them in the house but my initial impressions are:
First-the tripod. Now THAT is a piece of equip!
Built like a tank. ROCK solid. Very impressed. Realy adj. I can see me taking the center height bar out though. That will let it get real low to the ground.
And the 3265 head looks like it may be the ticket for fast changing between targets. (2 seperate hbird feeders about 12 ft apart) The wife really likes it. One hand and it is set and locked.
Second- the Kenko. Also looks like a good piece. Works well on my 70-300IS. AF and IS both still work as long as there is enough light. It will hunt in overcast and low contrast targets though. I will wait untill a better (sunny) day to make any final judgements on it.
My thanks to all who took the time and had the patience to read and advise me.
So far my money has been well spent by listening to the advice here.
Now if I could only make up my mind between the 300F4 L and the 100-400L:D
