Will the AF-assist beam work with a Rebel XTi?

No reason that I can think of why it wouldn't.

All the AF assist is, is a red lamp that turns off when the shutter's pressed.

If anyone owns one and can test it on a XTi that would be great. The compatibility list at the canon store only has the 20D on it.

Really, you should be just fine. The canon estore is notoriously out of date and incomplete. Most products don't even have images.

I have the 420EX which is the STE2 with a flash mounted on top. it helps focussing 90% of the time.

Yes sorry. For when I have trouble focusing in low light situations. Like club pictures.

I'd say it'll help but the red focussing lamp is very obvious!

Laser pointers work well too. Just shine your laser (not in some ones eyes )
on your subject and it will focus VERY fast.

Basically, I am interested in it for taking nightclub and concert photos.

The unit would keep the bulk down and the AF fast on the body of the camera for crowd shots, but still be able to trigger a pre-positioned flash on stage.

So no one owns one?
