I'm looking for a lense to basically replace the kit lense for my DRebel. The kits lense is a 18-35mm I think. I also have a 75-300mm... so I'm good with a zoom. I basically want a lense for low light (no flash). I have little light in my house and mostly take portrait pics of my kiddos. By no means a professional here. I'm looking at the 50mm 1.4. Good idea? Other suggestions?

I assume you mean the 50mm f/1.4, I think you will find 50mm a bit too long for indoors. Very nice lens all the same

I think you might have focus problems with fast lenses on the Dreb. Having said that, I'd say getting a better lens such as the Tamron 17-50 might be a good idea. The kit lens isn't that great.

The 50mm f1.4 will be fine on your digital rebel.

Can you explain that statement please? Maybe I don't understand all I think I know:confused:
I have the 50/f1.8 (the fastest lens I have) and see no focusing problems. Not an L by any stretch, but there is not a problem with focusing that I have found.
Not really argueing the statement, just wanting to understand what you mean.

It is just one of those Rhys statements that are hmm... different.

Coldrain,
Thanks, I thought I was missing something.
But I would still like to know what Rhys is saying. Maybe on a different body it makes a diff?

No, not really. The bigger the max. aperture, the more light AF sensors get and the more contrast they can detect, so the better the AF will work.
My guess is that Rhys has had one bad experience with a badly calibrated lens/camera combination that makes him give such a blanket statement. Or, which is not uncommon either, that it just is based on nothing.
