What are the differences between the Fujifilm S600fd and its big brother, the S9100? And, specifically, is there a difference in picture quality? To my untrained eye, the only separation is three million pixels, a flip out screen and a hundred bucks. Is there more that I'm missing? Does the more expensive camera take better pictures?

The main difference between the S6000fd and the S9100 is in the sensor - the S6000 is 6MP and goes to ISO3200, the S9100 is 9MP and goes to ISO1600. So the S6000 give you a stop more sensitivity in low light ( though they'd both be rather noisy at max ISO).

Then there are a lot of detail differences. The S9100 has command dial, and more control buttons, so you don't need to waste so much time scrolling through menus. It also has a tilting (though smaller) LCD, Macro mode, a cable release thread on the shutter button, and more.

I suggest you read and compare reviews of both cameras and decide what features will be useful to you, but in summary, if you're likely to take a lot of pictures in low light, the S6000fd may be a better bet. If you want to make very large prints (11x14" or more), the extra pixels of the S9100 will be useful.

The more expensive camera may enable you take better pictures in some specific situations, e.g. macro close ups, but in general, it's the photographer that makes the picture. A good photographer can make better pictures with a pinhole camera than a poor photographer can make with a ~$15000 22MP Mamiya ZD medium format.

Here is a reply I made to another member on this subject and my reasoning to go ahead and get the S6K.

The S6k has the same sensor and processor as the F30, which is 6th gen, the latest. The S96k is 5th gen.

Since the largest I usually print is 8.5 x 11 I didn't need the extra MP so 6.3 was fine.

I usually don't shoot with a flash so a separate hot shoe was not needed.

Both cameras have the same lens so that wasn't a factor.

Both cameras have basically the same body style.

The S96k does have the ability to use CF cards or XD cards so that is a plus but it was not enough to sway my decision.

The S96k has a better spread of ISO in my opinion. It's like my F10, 80-1600. I find the 3200 ISO on my s6k a last resort but I have been able to get a decent shot every now and then with it that high.

LCD on the s6k is larger/sharper.

EVF is sharper on the S95k but neither is really suitable for manual focus, both do fine for framing a shot.

S6k has scene modes which can be handy and FD which is mildly useful.

S6k is cheaper.

So once you add everything up the S6K won out for me based on my needs.

Hope this helps and good luck!

oh btw, one thing I've noticed is the price of the s6k is starting to creep up from when I purchased back in Nov.
