I've ordered a s6500fd but am unsure if I will use the raw mode much. I've read that it takes a long time to work with the files. But I've also read that the in camera processing compresses a bit too much.

How long would it take me to just upload the raw to my computer, then convert to jpeg at a better compression??

I don't really want to be hours working on all my photos, so does anyone have a rough time how long it would take me?

I have an AMD 1800 mhz and 500mb Crucial memory with windows XP..

It will be a couple minutes per pic from shot to jpg. These are rough ballpark times for my S6k.

p4 2.4Ghz, 1gig ram

shot record = 8-10 sec
DL to PC via USB cable = 5 - 10 sec
conversion to tiff / jpg with FPS = 1 - 2 min

*Note*
photo editing time not calculated since that varies from shot to shot. Also you can run the conversion in batch mode once all the editing is done.

yeah it can take some time....

I did a shoot yesterday evening... all i did to convert the files was leave my computer running overnight... It certainly didn't take all night to convert the images.... But it takes a sizable chunck of time of you have 50 or more images all taking 2 minutes a piece!

Btw I have a dual core athlon xp. running at 2.4Ghz per core. (the actual chip is a 3800). and 1Gb of ram.

Thanks for the precise reply :)

I'll estimate my time as double yours so = maybe 4 minutes...

Can you tell me the time it takes from your saved tiff, to PhotoShop, then saved to jpeg using PS highest compression? because this is said to be much better than the jpeg compression used with FinePix software.

Also would I have to do any photo editing with the RAW file at all, or could I use the jpeg for editing and keep the original RAW (as tiff but unprocessed) in case I ever needed it?

Thanks

By looking at the difference between RAW shots and the finepix jpeg, it seems worth it to use the RAW. I will definitely try this out and find out how long it would take me...

the best bit i find with raw isn't the extra quality because more often than not the fuji Jpeg is very good. The biigest bonus is been able to tweak that white balance.. It makes a huge differance in a shot.

Just been able to sort out little problems that can ruin a shot make the extra time worthwhile.

There's a time and place for using Jpeg mode tho... bright sunny days, or taking sports pictures then the faster write times are a real bonus..

To convert RAW to jpg using Finepix may take 1-2 mins, but using Photoshop CS2 converting RAW to jpg (max 12) happens almost instantly.

I don't find the Finepix software to be of the best quality. Boxes don't appear to be defined properly, text is cut off, text wont appear on a button unless it is moused over, weird stuff like that. The software itself seems to work ok, but seems to take a long time.
