Help. I get this message when I put the CD in and press on
"LUMIX Simple Viewer" from the start up menu.
Error Code: -5003 : 0x8004ace8
Error Information:
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (981)
pAPP:LUMIX Simple Viewer
PVENDOR:Panasonic
PGUID:2CDCCE7E-55D5-40CC-AEA0-ABA54713501F
$9.0.0.333
@Windows XP Service Pack 2 (2600) IE 7.0.6000.16414
It also says under the "details" button. . .
"Please make sure you have finished any previous setup and closed other applications. If the error still occurs, please contact your vendor: Panasonic."
But I have no other browsers or any other applications open.

I've never used the software that came with the TZ1, and never connected it to my computer. I just download images at high-speed through an $8 USB card reader. Frustration? NOT! :o

USB card reader? Is that something that I can just buy at a RadioShack?
Walmarts like 40 miles away. Also I have a laptop, so will that be ok?
One last question. Do you think that by not being able to use the included software, in lieu of the "card reader", that there will be certain features I will not be able to do?

The only software that I use that came with the camera is the Panaroma Maker.:)

USB card reader? Is that something that I can just buy at a RadioShack? YES
Walmarts like 40 miles away. Also I have a laptop, so will that be ok? Yes as long as it has a USB port

I bought a Secure Digital Card Reader after hearing the recommendations on this site. Could not believe the difference. Downloading from the camera 10 minutes, downloading from the card reader 15 seconds. You also protect the camera by not using the included cord which will wear out with frequent use.
As far as where to get one, look anywhere that sells digital camera's. I googled Walgreens and they even had one. You should not have to pay more than 15 at the most.
For working with photo's try Google Picassa it's free and probably will do what ever the Simple Viewer will do.

If you're worried that you won't be able to use all the TZ1's functionality because you haven't downloaded the included ArcSoft software suite, don't worry. Of course, this assumes that you already have some way of viewing/editing/organizing photo images. If you don't, you may need something like Adobe Elements at least to get going, or use Picasa (a Windows-only program) for editing & viewing. But at least you can get your images onto your computer without hassle.

I did install simple viewer a few years ago.....and found it not useful to me......but I wonder if that error has something to do with IE7.....if so there should be a patch at the Panasonic site..

Well thanks for all that. I probably will just go to Walgreens and get this card reader thingy.
As far as all the capabilites regarding editing, etc., I have no idea what can be done. Im very new to all this digital camera stuff, but like it a lot and I still have to read the manual. There are over 100 pages to read. Hopefully I will become an expert on this camera after finishing reading it all. Thanks for all your help.
P.S. Is it called a USB card reader or a Secure Digital Card Reader? that Im going to have to buy? Sorry, I just have no idea about most things related to computer/electronics etc.-just trying to learn as much as I can.

There are many different types of memory cards. The type you need is the USB secure digital card reader. USB is the type of port on the computer and the secure digital is the type of card. If your a newby to computers you may need additional help once you have a card reader, feel free to come back and ask more questions. Thats what we are here for.

I agree, somewhat. I dont completely agree that it be an IE problem, but I think a Service Pack 2 problem. Make sure you have all the latest Windows updates and deffinatly make sure you have the newest version of Windows Installer(3.1).
If all else fails, boot up in Safe Mode and try installing that way.
Mike, beautiful Panorama! Where was it taken? if I may offer a very small suggestion, crop about an 8th of an inch off the top, you can see some white in the top left from the pano software. Im being picky though.

Those corners are easy to miss on a Pano. A little touch (you can do it right on Panorama Maker itself) on the top and bottom will clip off those "gaps." The OP may not see such things with in-camera stitching?

Since you mentioned Walgreens you want a card reader similar to this

However if I were to purchase a new card reader today I would make certain it was compatible with the new SDHC cards.

John & Jason I saw that wee bit in the corners. I don't do much PP unless I get the pic crooked which I do alot, for some reason I lean to the left. I wish they had an on screen grid to help line up photo's.
That photo was taken 12800 feet at Engineers Pass in between Silverton and Lake City Colorado. We rented a jeep and did the ALpine Loop.

Looks breathtaking. I hope someday I get the chance to see something like that!

Now that makes me laugh. I trotted about 35 feet down a grass covered hill to get a photo of my wife sitting in the flowers. It was breathtaking alright I couldn't breath at that attitude, I was fine until I got out of the jeep.

LOL, thats exactly why I chose the word breathtaking. Once I saw the elevation, I knew breathing would be difficult. It is a beautiful place though, and you captured it quite well.
