The 10 MP 1D Mark III is the upgrade to the 8 MP 1D Mark II/II N, not the 1Ds Mark II

They increased it. The Mark II/IIn was 8MP.
I hope to have one sometime this year. I shoot enough sports to justify it over a 5D. Just a matter of the financial end of things.

I'm hoping you both will be getting one of these early on so I'll have some tech support. B&H already has my order for a Mark III and the new 16-35 lens :D
Now that I've got the III on order for delivery just prior to some equestrian events I'll be shooting for money I've got some time to see if any more appropriate camera comes out (like the one Peter's waiting on).
The big question will be on what to do with the 30D and EF-S lenses. I'm wondering if it would be better to keep the 30D and 10-22 rather than getting the 16-35 for the III. The extra body/lens would cost the same to keep as buying the new 16-35. I guess it comes down to convenience with 2 bodies or the larger aperture.
Pulling the trigger on the new body seems like a no-brainer with this event coming up. I've got no doubt that I could sell the III if i wanted to after the shoot for a few hundred off which I would have gladly paid as a rental fee.

They don't even list it on their site yet. How could you have ordered one? It was announced...not released. It won't be available until April.

As it stands right now, I can only dream of this camera for a long time.
If your calendar is free in May you are welcome to come up to Mass. and shoot the event with me. I'd be willing to pay for your hotel and hand over the camera to you for the weekend in exchange for the rights to what you shoot for me at the hunt club and a firm commitment to shave :)

I emailed my B&H rep the order to be placed at whatever their openning price is. I don't 'Need' the camera until May other than for learning how to shoot it.

Thanks but no thanks. I make it a point to not touch things I can't afford. Not fear of damage but I don't want to be wishing I had it when it's not even a remote possibility. Bad for my psyche.

Don- With your amazing talent you should definately be bringing in plenty of money to affort any of these toys you want-you're just dealing with the wrong type of customer.
I anticipate this camera paying for itself in the first two events I shoot as I have identified and made the right connections prior to the event and I have a background in smoozing and selling to an afluent consumer demographic. (As anyone whose seen my images knows I don't have any talent other than just picking really nice looking stuff to shoot.)

After reviewing the WHITE PAPER, I may have to take a step back. There are some considerations I see here that were influenced by Fujifilm, with their dynamic SR-sensor technology (6.1MP sensors for regular light & a matching set of 6.1 MP sensors for highlights). That was a serious consideration and I am happy to see that Canon found a way to put it in the new APS-H sensor.
So okay, in deeper reflection ... it goes on my Christmas list for 2007. You all can forget dropping off the 1Ds MKII N ($6500) you had planned to send ... I can save a few bucks ($2500) with this one and buy that new lens and flash. You win! :D Hooray for your side!
EOS 20D as a backup and as a place holder for all my Canon EF-S and TAMRON Di-II lenses.
Admittedly, burning through a 8 GB SD card @ 10FPS does sound pretty cool. Especially at ISO-6400 with an EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II & 580EX II combo.
Bring on the ARCA/NASCAR champions @ 180+ mph... beat this one! Do you have any idea how close you have to get to the cars with that wide a lens ... with a 1.3x DCF? The draft alone will probably kill ya!
My "Dream Camera"? Nah, but it could be a slight improvement over the EOS 20D ... which is a good thing.
LOL :p

I couldn't resist doing a quick, unscientific comparison with the 5D, so here goes. The 5D shot is in my room, also taken at ISO 3200, JPG Large, Standard Picture Style. The subject which is part of a wall, printer and wooden desk seemed to have a range of exposure so I thought it might make an interesting comparison.
First, the resized images: (top is always 1dm3, bottom is 5d)
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i185/noyjimi/1dm3_resized.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i185/noyjimi/5d_resized.jpg
Then, the following are all 100% crops.
On a seemingly well-exposed part:
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i185/noyjimi/1dm3_wellexposed.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i185/noyjimi/5d_wellexposed.jpg
On pure black (or as black as I could find on the 5D scene):
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i185/noyjimi/1dm3_black.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i185/noyjimi/5d_kindablack.jpg
On skin tones (or the wooden surface, in the 5D scene):

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i185/noyjimi/5d_fakeskin.jpg

They're pretty close if not indiscernible. I guess if anything can be concluded, it's that both are great cameras! :D
(P.S. If the orig owner of the 1dm3 pic is not cool with the copies/crops I did, I can take the pics down.)

So; you're speculating the ISO performance is up to the 5D? Wow! Not bad for a 1.3 crop that can take photos that fast. I suppose that since they kept it down to 10MP, the pixel sizes must be about the same. Coldrain?

Wouldn't it stand to reason that the EOS 1D MkII N will be totally be retired from manufacturing as obsolete... in preference to the MKIII?

Metadata must be more precise in reading the info than the camera is in actually implementing it...or something. Maybe since the actions are so quick (slap of the shutter, slam down of the aperture, etc) it doesn't always hit at exactly f/2.8 or 1/500th for example but gets close enough for proper exposure.

I've asked for two, and I am the first on his (now growing) list (I sent the owner of the business an SMS only an hour after the announcement - he was kind enough to reply almost instantly (it was 8:00 PM)). I may decide to take only one depending on my financial situation in a month (the usual problems of small business: cash-flow) and whether I would save a bundle buying from Adorama.
I need to but at least one here to keep the CPS lads happy.

I know exactly how the SBO financials work. When things are good they're great. But then the dry spells hit and you're pinchin' each and every penny.
