canon sd300 vs. nikon 5200

Not having any experience with digital cameras, I am trying to find an easy camera that is portable and is easy to use with a 4-year old. Aside from "shutter lag", I would very much like to minimize red-eye from the photos. (too many photos have been wasted and too much money has been spent with using film.) I have recently researched several cameras, and am asking for guidance -- specifically between the sd300 and the 5200. My understanding is that the Nikon has proprietary red-eye reduction software??? Is this true...does it work?? Are photos significantly better than the sd300? If I do not want to eliminate red-eye on my computer, can photo kiosks eliminate red-eye? As you can tell, red-eye is an important factor in my decision-making process.
