View Full Version : Fuji s6000/6500 users: Where was your camera made?

Hey friends. First off, I am not implying that the country of origin that made your camera is directly correlated with its quality and durability, I am just merely curious if things I've read around the 'net are true, namely that all s6000fd's sold in the United States are manufactured in China and s6500fd's sold elsewhere are made in Japan.
Okay, okay, I also have a minor quibble within myself that I'm trying to rectify. If I look inside the lens of my s6000 while it is in full wide angle, I can see this inch long piece of lint, like a strand of yarn or white hair, stuck on one side of what I think is the aperture baffle. I know it doesn't affect my image quality, but it's irritating nonetheless.

Hmm, China here too.
So I was at my local mall (Los Cerritos Center in Cerritos, CA) doing my typical man-procrastinated-Valentine's-gift-and-had-to-wait-25-minutes-in-line-at-Godiva-Chocolatier-so-he-doesn't-sleep-on-the-couch-tonight routine. On my way out, I popped into the Ritz Camera.
Their s6000 (not s6500) on display?
Japan.
Hmm...

I got my S6000fd about a week before Christmas from Beach Camera. Lowest price I saw at the time with rebate. It's made in China and now that you've brought this up Brian I'm wondering too about quality. I've posted here before about my displeasure with this camera and that hasn't changed a bit. I'm terribly disappointed with it. I was close to sending it back but that would be an admission to my wife that I made a mistake. Ain't gonna happen. LOL
My opinion is that Fuji missed the boat badly simply by the fact that you can't use auto, or it's not advised to use auto for most shots. Even with a moderately priced DSLR an auto mode is most usable for everyday shots indoor and outdoor. I've taken some good pictures with this camera but to me I have to 'fight' to get them and when you have to do that you miss the special moments that you've only got one try to get what you want. I've even thought about maybe this camera is flawed in some way but I keep on plugging and my opinion is not changing. Missing too many good pictures that I hardly missed with my S5000.
Someday I'll have to admit that I made a mistake, then possibly, I'll be forgiven and I can start thinking about the DSLR in my future. Had they announced the Nikon D40 a bit sooner that would definitely have been a option even with buying another lens.
I know I'm going against the grain here because most of you seem happy with your cameras but I'm not and it's not looking any rosier.

I guess all the latest offerings from Fuji are made in China.
bdod1880, the poor performance 'auto' modes aren't the result of 'Made in China'. They make cameras to specifications as per designed by engineers in Japan(?) approved by HQ in Japan.
While not directly relating to S6000 I want to tell the story of my broter's Nikon D70s. He has been a film user for over 10 years and like many film users resisted the change to digital until late last year when he decided to go DSLR.
The newly received D70S in hands, his trusty Tamron lenses at the ready... snap one on and looked through the VF and all one could see was a cloudy view. After spending hours fudging through the manuals and change setttings, then tried different lens after lens, there was no improvement. I thought it must be his Tamron lenses not compatible with the D70s.
A few days later, Nikon replaced his camera with another one and it was perfect. The first he got was faulty! It was the result of the camera made in Thailand.
Now, if there was someong checking through the VF before packing they would have known it was faulty!
Hopefully Fuji's standard quality control is somewhat higher than Nikon's?
These days you can't really tell where your electronic goods are made. Leicas are made in Japan now... maybe China later?

there shouldn't be any differance in made in china and made in japan.
the Ccd's will have been made in the same factory regardless to the same quality and standards. The only real differance in the cameras will be the construction costs as laybor is cheaper in china. If anything the construction in china is probably better because of the lack of well paid jobs... Working in a camera factory would be seen as a good job! And most of the staff are probably quite happy and efficant. If you don't belive me go have a look at some of the pictures of chicken processing factories, or injection moulding factories! Not nice places!
If you think your camera has a problem take it to a fuji dealer and have them look at it. They see these cameras every day and will probably be able to advise you there and then if they think it has a problem! Even if you got the camera from another retailer, the local fuji centre will uphold the waranty, taking it in for them to have a look at shouldn't cost you anything. You'll probably find there store has a lot in it that will help you anyways.... Filters, decent tripods ect...
the poor performace auto mode is nothing to do with the camera. Like already stated it's the factory presets for the camera that let it down. Hopefully fuji are working on a firmware flash that will impove this, or add a bit more control in Auto mode like high iso/normal iso. don't hold your breath tho! The actual camera components and the CCD are very good. And this camera should out shoot the S5000 in auto.
If you realy want to speed up the process why not register your camera and send fuji some feedback! they have a system set up where you can comment on things you like and hate about there products!

Like you bdod, I find auto mode disappointing on indoor shots. I now use P mode indoors as it is virtually like auto but lets you pick the iso setting. Now I'm a happy owner .... Troop
