I was going to post this in the Which Camera Should I Buy? forum but I realized the question was basically about Fujis.

I've been trying to decide between the Fuji F series and the Canon SD series. The Canon's have most things going for them except for the high ISO, which is appealing since I do a moderate amount of shooting in low light and also a bit of sports photography. This would probably be enough to convince me to get the Fuji F30 or F20, except that I've found most well-lighted Fuji shots to be noticeably drab.

Compare the results from here at DC Resource:
Fuji F30 (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/fuji/finepix_f30-review/DSCF0119.JPG)
Cannon SD700 (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_sd700-review/IMG_0068.JPG)

This is a concise example of what I have noticed from looking at galleries from F series and Canon owners.

The Fuji colors may or may not be more "accurate" or closer to reality, but the fact is that I like the image from the Canon a whole lot more. Additionally, I am going into the Peace Corps, so post processing will be difficult. (I don't want to have to deal with anything more than perhaps some kind of batch saturation increase.)

So I guess my question is more about the Fuji than the Canon-- will I be able to adjust i.e. the Fuji F30 either on-camera or easily on the computer to output colors that are a bit less dreary? Or if I don't like the full light images from the Fuji is that a pretty good sign I just shouldn't get the camera, even though the low light stuff I've seen has looked great?

The fuji's have a chrome setting which boosts color saturation. Brings it more in line with the canon's output.

I use Paint Shop Pro X and it is very easy to tweak saturation to your taste.

I've tried the Chrome setting on the F30 and I've found that I have to be careful when using it. Colours can look too unrealistic, and you definitely want to avoid it when humans are the subject. But I like the effect for sunsets and such.

Here's a photo taken with normal colour:

This is the same photo, with saturation enhanced slightly in PSP X:

This one was taken with the Chrome setting:

I think the Chrome setting wasn't too bad for this subject, except for the fact that it also increases contrast to a degree that you start to lose details in the shadows...note the door.

The way I see it colours produced by digital cameras are a personal thing, nothing has realy changed since the film days, some liked Kodak film because of its bright colours other liked Fuji film for other reasons, so it goes with digital, I have tried about six different brands of digital cameras, all produce slighly different colours, I found Kodaks exagerated blues, although I like Canons to me they produced strange greens, both of my Fuji's have given me what I like which is nice postcard saturated colours, good luck with your choice.

Colour preference is really personal thing for sure. Canon's warm colours are over saturated to my eyes. But many people, or should I sasy MOST, do love that.
As for Kodak's new offering COLOUR SCIENCE, it really makes your skin tone very smooth and it works very well (if you are caucasian). I was shown a nicely photos of children taken by a friend's Kodak digital cam. Very eye catching colour until I notice that the kids' skin look nicely white. The problem is the children are Asians. Michael Jackon would love that... but I'd prefer my camera to show natural colours; whether the subjects are white, black or blue.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody. I decided to go with the f30 --I'll post some pictures when it gets here. (can't wait!)

I leave my S6500fd on the chrome colour setting most of the time. I actually find it closer to actual colour than the standard setting which I find a bit flat and lifeless necessitating saturating in Pshop.

On the chrome setting, I don't usually touch the colour setting at all in post processing. Although I have toned it down just slightly once or twice.

It depends what you like, I've always like nice strong (but not over the top) colour.

My honest observation is Fuji in my case 6500 is far ahead in showing natural colors then Canon as I just saw some snaps taken by canon and RED color was too much noisy for my eyes.Fuji's colors are close to natural colors in my feeling.

So my f30 finally got here... here's one of my first pics! (I'd say the colors are pretty nice, no?)

I've played with the chrome settings a few times and just find the coloring a bit over the top. I find the standard setting more natural. I'm sure their is a place for chrome colors but not sure where ??
