Budget
======

+/- $300

SIZE:
====

* pocket-size

Features
========

I would think 5-7 would suffice

* What optical zoom will you need? The more the better...with image stabilization (but the Canon S IS series are too large)

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10) 8

Do you care for manual controls? Yes, but probably won't initially use them much.

General Usage
=============

* What will you generally use the camera for? vacation pictures (nature, water, street scenes, trips to China and Hawaii), some portraits/group photos.

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? rarely over 8x10...but might need cropping

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? Not a lot, but would like a decent flash.

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? No

Miscellaneous
=============

Are there particular brands you like or hate? Like Canon, Nikon. Have used an Olympus OM1 for years, haven't gotten used to non-camera specialists (e.g., Casio, Sony) making cameras.

Are there particular models you already have in mind? Thinking about Canon 710 IS.

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle (some wide angle capability, or the ability to add one externally), Image Stabilization (absolutely! I'm a big guy and will be handling a little camera...as will my wife). Might like the option of a waterproof housing in the future.

Thanks.

Seems to be the Canon A710IS that you've already mentioned is a good choice.

I would certainly agree with flippedgazelle 100%-

The Canon A-710 IS is an excellent camera, and it has received excellent reviews as well.
