Hello guys!
I'm thinking to sell my Nikon D50 and buy the D80. I have the D50 for almost a year, and i'm still happy with it but the 10 megapixels made me wish to give up on my D50.
So .. what do you think is it ok to do the trade? To sell my D50 and buy the D80 just because of the 4 megapixels diference?

If it's just the megapixels, no. That's one of the least important differences between the two cameras. If that's the only thing you're missing, save your money and enjoy your current camera for a few more years.

I'd trade for the bigger viewfinder, commander mode wireless flash and better buffer before I traded for the megapixels.

Let me guess, maria wil not use commander mose (just as almost no one with a D80 or even a D200 will), wireless is pretty useless to almost everyone.
Most people do not use the buffer of their camera either, that is just for people that need/want to make a huge sequence of photos in the hope one of the frames will be decent...
So, all in all, the 4mp difference seems more important from all these things.
But, OP, do you often wish you had a bit higher resolution with the photos you make? If you often find yourself wishing you had more information in your photos, then it may be a good idea. If not, then clearly 6mp is enough for you.
As a side note, do take into consideration that if you want to really exploit the extra resolution, you need to shoot in RAW (jpegs on the D80 are a LOT less sharp than jpegs on the D50), and you need to use better lenses. Else you will not gain much in resolution, even though the megapixels did a 6 to 10 jump.

Hahahaha Coldy are you gonna tell me you know the shooting habits of everyone on the planet?!?!?!?
Maybe for someone who only ever shoots flower macros and the undersides of cars after a night of drinking, then yeah commander modes, buffers, etc aren't really needed. But look Coldy. People shoot sports. They shoot weddings. They shoot kids. They shoot in studios and on location. They use anything from D50s to 1Ds IIs. To call a feature useless basically because YOU do not use it is absurd. There are a LOT of shooting styles out there and using the buffer doesn't mean it's "in the hope that one of the frames will be decent..."
And no I would not upgrade just for the megapixels either.

Yes, I cant call you what you are, which is a shame. Almost everyone does not exlude everyone.
If you want to understand what that means, just try to use your thinking power, ok? Really, most people who buy a DSLR like a D80 do not use it for studio shooting with multiple flash guns, most people who buy a DSLR like a D80 will not use a wireless option. That really just is how it is.
I love the way you keep on doing this, it just shows your lack of understanding what people (me in particular) are actually saying.
I was stating the obvious fact that for most people (and wanna bet that includes Maria?) the mentioned features really are not important, and that for YOU some of the features might be important is as interesting as... watching grass grow.
And it is fine for you to make fun of my photos. You are not one of the most talented around.

Coldy I understand exactly what you're saying. You're making summary judgements of shooting styles. I suppose you have statistics on this? You have survey results from every photographer out there? Didn't think so.
I never claimed to be most talented - heck I'm not even close to figuring this all out. I never bashed your images either. You do seem to shoot a lot of macro and you also seem to shoot odd things when you've been drinking (but don't we all?!?! :D).
You also have this really twisted habit of saying things, and then when quoted, saying that isn't what you said. It's in black & white Coldy. You can read it yourself, as can everyone else.

What most people will use and what's usefull are two different things:
Most people do not in any way shape or form need anything more then a 3 megapixel point and shoot. 4x6 prints for most folks, oversatured and printed poorly on home printers or Walmart.com.
The wireless flash is DEFFINITLY an "Advanced" feature but once you get a SB-600 and try it you'll be REALLY amazed and it's by far the "Easiest" way to do portait shooting (2 SB-600's offset and the built in for fill) and for the macro shooter it offers a HUGE benefit of being able to put the flash anywhere at any angle which does help quite a bit.
Now is it true what coldrain said? Sure. Does it mean it's not a feature that I'd consider usefull over the megapixels? Yes.
As far as buffer goes, 4 RAW images is pretty easy to hit, getting 50% more raw shots I'd say is worth it, though I wish it was more on D200 level of 27 raw shots (I did a very cool "going down the slide" poster using a sequence of raw shots which I wouldn't of been able to do with a more limited buffer)
None fo these things is "required" but I'd say deffinitly advantages more so then 10 vs 6 mp in terms of what creative oportunities it opens up.

if you have never had or used wireless, its pretty easy to think you will never need it. But Im sure if you thought about it, you would find uses for it.
Shooting across 2 rooms where arches and balustrades are in the way of light reaching the next room, or large indoor scenes with groups of people. Illuminating large subjects multi point or fill flash, wireless flash is so much easier to organize.
If you ever have a hankering to do weddings, semi serious portraits, large interiors, industrial photography, architectural photography, Im sure it would come in useful for you.
.... You do seem to shoot a lot of macro and you also seem to shoot odd things when you've been drinking.....
What makes you say that, how do you know hes drinking when shooting?? Or are you just assuming he does simply because thats what you do?
Anyway... to Maria, Upgrading just because of pixels, isnt a good enough reason. If you are happy with the images and results you get with the D50, I would stick with it.

As everyone has already stated...I (too) would not upgrade based on megapixels alone (unless money is not an issue...?). But, having more mpx is handy. If you're anything like me, you don't always get the perfect composition. Cropping helps in this case.
The downfall of more mpx, of course, is more space! I've been shooting RAW+JPG lately (D80) so I can have RAW's when I decide I need them...and my 4gig card can only hold about 200 shots!
Now, with that said...the D80 does have a lot of other nice features over the D50.

Again, I wasn't bashing his images - just referencing an old thread. ;)
:o My apologies sir. I read one post of yours and made an assumption, maybe next time I should do a little more reading and thinking before I respond. Again, I apologize CDI:o :D

It was a while ago so I suppose I'm the one being obscure.  No apologies needed. I don't drink and click though...can't trust myself not to drop it. Oh and that ties up a hand that could be put to better use holding a beer. :D
