Does it make any sense to buy a Canon S2 IS in February 2007? Is it wise to buy yesterday's technology even at a very good price? I have found a brand new S2 for around $200 and there seem to be few upgrades from the S2 to S3. Would I be a wise consumer to save $150 that I could use for additional lenses or is it penny wise, pound foolish to step back technologically in the rapidly changing digital camera world? The theoretical question intrigues me but I really look for replies from those who have used both and can make a realistic comparison. Thanks

Tough question... And let me add one more variable. It is generally thought that Canon will announce a replacement for the S3 in March. No one knows what features it will have, or prices or anything like that.

So let me say this. I still love my S2, and I don't regret buying it even as newer models have come out. While the S3 is a better camera, I don't think it is worth the current price difference. But if it was me, I would be tempted to wait until next month to see what happens.

Does that help or make it harder?

The S2 and S3 don't have removable lenses, so you can't really save for new ones (you could get add-on converters, though).

I think in this particular case, you're right that the S3 doesn't really add much. However, that's generally pretty well reflected in the market, and searching right now I don't find the S2 that cheaply at reputable places. I'd be a little skeptical of the $200-new price. Mostly I see it about $80 cheaper than the S3, at which point I'd probably say go with the newer model.
