Canon number one digital camera in US, Kodak falls to number three
Research firm IDC has released their digital camera market share numbers for the US, and the news is not good for Kodak, who fell from the number one position to number three. Canon is the new number one, with a 20% share of camera sales in 2006, followed by Sony. After those two we have Kodak (whose shipments fell 31% in 2006), Nikon, and HP.

globally it would be different
HP has stopped marketing in Asia, including Australia
Japan has a huge influence on camera sales, and the numbers there are more volatile
dSLR sales also vary considerably, dSLRs are 30% of revenue

DSLR sales in FY 2005/2006
Canon: 1,900,000
Nikon: 1,340,000
Olympus: 250,000
Pentax: 100,000
Minolta: 90,000 (first half of FY 05/06)

Konica/Minolta Photographic are now in the hands of Sony, Sony made #3 in dSLR sales in Tokyo replacing Olympus, but its believed demand has since flattened out.

When you look at figures about whos on first etc, you need to take into account what those figures include,.....or not

Yeah their sales are so bad that I am 90th in line to receive a backordered Leica D-Lux 3.

IMO If Panasonic does not go back to the FZ20 design and improve it's weaknesses they are going to sink even lower. The 50 is a dog.

No DOG took those photos, Jerry.:o

Interesting, I love my FZ20 but if I was buying now I'd go for a 50 & relish the extra facilities (or maybe go for a TZ1 plus a cheap dslr ? ). I think the only thing I'd miss on the FZ50 would be the constant f2.8. I guess we just tend to love the cam we have while we have it!

But I'll swear that its OIS system is better than your FZ20's OIS system, and I'll also bet it can deliver decent imagery at ISO 400, at least. So the "constant" f2.8 "advantage" gets offset somewhat?

Furthermore, I'll take the "instant start" feature of the FZ50, due to its manual zoom ring, so that when you start or re-start the camera, you don't have to wait the 5 seconds or so before you can shoot?

The goal for Panasonic is/was 10% world market share. If they achieved this number, then they reached their short term target.

Yes you are probably right John I'd expect the OIS system to get better as they developed it & I'm sure the 50 is a better camera overall. I have a friend who has one & is very happy with it. As I said if I had to replace the old FZ20 right now I'd have no problem getting an FZ50 apart from justifying the extra cash outlay to my wife that is. Having said that it would be an easier sell than a dslr & long lenses would be ;) oh well I can dream.
