Gang,

I own a Sony Cybershot DSC-W1. Love the camera, but I've noticed no matter how I mess with the settings I just CANNOT get pictures taken in dark conditions (indoors or out) to come out.

I am about to head to Europe, and am hoping this time (the last two trips all my interior shots were ruined) I can get some pics of the insides of those wonderful churches. Can any of you offer advice on proper settings for this sort of camera? I'm not sure if it is just not possible with this cameras capabilities or if I am doing something wrong.

I never had this problem with my old Olympus .. all I had to do was mess with the ISO settings and I was golden .. and that camera is about 7 years old!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Not to sound totally silly, but I'm assuming your flash works, but you are trying to take available light pictures?

If you are using flash, it only has a particular range (helped by high ISO and small f-number, but that range is only about 3.5 m/12 ft. If you are trying to light a church with a compact camera, it will be dufficult.

Can you post a sample "bad" picture, hopefully with exposure info?

i hate to tell you this but i think you may have bought the wrong camera for low light indoor photos like churches. is it tripod mountable at least ?

is there a night mode?

my old Sony CyberShot DSC-P72 had a night shooting mode and it works pretty okay for what it was :D

Your Sony W1 should have no problems taking low light images, here is a Sony W100 image at ISO 400 handheld:
