Im sorry, but Im just too much of a beginner. I saw that it says. . .

Telephoto lens TC-DC58N From $93 Boosts focal range by 1.75X to a whopping 368 mm; requires conversion lens adapter

But what is the actual optical zoom capability of this Canon A710 IS camera?

Im comparing this camera with the Panasonic TZ1-which has a opt. zoom of 10. I want one of these compact, pocketable cameras with the greatest zoom possible, without compromising the resolution, so please let me know about the zoom with the Canon. Thank you.

The A7xx is 6X zoom so the pany has more.

But forgive me for asking, Doesn't the telescopic lens attachment and the necessary accesories make the Canon have a longer optical zoom than just its standard 6x zoom without the telescopic attachment? That's all, I just thought the telescopic lens attachment and conversion adapter allow the Canon to have a longer zoom-albeit at a higher cost.

The 710s 6x optical zoom is equiv to 210mm (35mm x6), that 1.75x teleconverter brings it up to 368, but of course, with the extra attachment, the Canon is no longer "pocketable." The TZ1 takes you to an optical 350mm (35mm x10) without any attachment, not to mention the extra cost.

If you don't print larger than say 5x7, then the new Canons have a "safety zoom"/"digital teleconverter" feature which can double the zoom to 12x without image degradation.

Read about it here: http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/psa710is/index-e.html.

This, however, is nothing more than an in-camera cropping tool which any camera can do post processing cropping.
