I've been considering the new Olympus 550 UZ with it's 18X zoom, pending the final reviews of course, but have started wondering if I wouldn't be happier with the Canon S3 and a teleconverter. I don't know much about using these but it seems to me that I'd get just about the same zoom with the teleconverter that I would the new Olympus 550 18X.

I do prefer Canon products and especially like the movie mode in the S3. I use a Canon A710 now with complete satisfaction. Video capability is really important to me and I think it's likely better in the S3 than the Oly 550.

I've never been much for add on lenses etc but it would seem to me that the Canon teleconverter might be a good application for me. After the 4 days in Yellowstone it could go back in the box for the year.

I'm wondering if anyone out there has actually used the S3 with a teleconverter and what their impressions are.

The canon TC is really good and it almost looks as if the images are sharper with it but it has major vignetting when its on. When you use it you almost have to use nearly full zoom to get past the vignetting. You cant use any filters or lens hoods with it either.

So there is some good and bad things about it, its kind of exspensive also.

I'm guessing that I would use the TC on max nearly all the time since the good shots of animals are usually at extreme range.

BowerR64, do you use the adapters etc mfg by Canon. I know they are plastic but are they satisfactory?

Well it might be your lucky day in a couple of respects the Canon Tc is great actually gives your sharper pics in most instances than possible without it. I love it but alas there is a very good possibility that I would be willing to sell mines with a lensmate adapter that's aluminum and fits perfectly.
