I am considering this camera. It seems like its got some great bang for the buck. I just thought i would ask you guys for an honest opinion. Maybe there is a camera that would be a better buy. The only other one i was looking at was the panasonic one with the lumix lens. I was shying away from it cause my pops has had lots of problems with the build quality from his 6 meg version of it. I just want a semi bullet proof camera with some of the DSLR features without going with the whole DSLR rig.
Any info would be appreciated,
Thank you,
Adam

if you can afford it then go for it
i would suggest (if you havent done so) visiting a camera store and play with it. and take your time.
and were you talking about the panasonic LZ5? if so then look into the LZ6/LZ7, they are lower priced and i believe you're gettin just about everything u need in a camera =)

The price isnt the issue, mainly i just want any feedback regarding my concerns that anyone might have. Build quality being pretty high on my list. If anyone has any kind of feedback regarding it pro or con. I would really appreciate it. Be as nit picky as you like. It all comes into play when deciding. I want a GOOD camera, this seems really good but everyones write up on their own camera always seem like they would be a great buy.
Again thanks in advance.

According to a lot of reviews I've read, The A640 is a much better value than the G7 but of course once can easily argue for the G7's hot shoe and metal body but other than that the A640 is equal or better :)

I love my A640.
This is a minor complaint but the only construction complaint I have is that the metal ring you remove from the front to put a lens adapter on feels thin and flimsy (compared to the ring from an S3 or my old A60). However, since this just the removable ring, just be gentle. On the off-chance you do damage it (I know of no one who has), I'm sure it is a cheap replacement part from Canon, assuming you even felt the need to replace it.
If you never get a lens adapter for filters or lenses, then you will never remove this ring so you will have 0 chance of ever damaging this one part.

spend bit more money and but nikon D40/50 or canon rebel Xt.
those are better bang for the buck-much better.
G7 sucks cause it's very expensive, iso settings the image quality not so good, and doesnt have good grip.

i was going to get the 30D, but i will wait to see what is going on with the 40D. I do not like the xt and the xti after comparing them to the 30D. I would expect the 40D's build quality to be much better in the long run. I just need a good point n shoot for now.

I have the G7 for several months and find to be a wonderful compact with great pics and very easy to use all the functions. My friend has the A640 and it takes a nice pic but it just doesnt look as good as the G7, and im not that good. Also the lense quality is better on the G7.
This was taken in low light and im very happy with the results from my lovely wife.

And its macro results are pretty good also. This was taken on the fly in a dining room with flourescent bulbs on.

I dont trust reviews any more for cameras I usually get a different result. I wanted a camera with a longer zoom to compliment the G7. So I got the Nikon D50 with 18-300 lense. Which by the way is way over the price of the G7. And got the Panasonic FZ50. So after a week of use I found better quality from pics from the FZ50 and the Nikon got rave reviews. So what im saying is dont trust the reviews try one for a while and find whats right for you.

thank you for your reply, i think we are on the same page with what our needs for a camera are. i think i am still going to wait for the 40D and see how that compares with the other rigs. but for now i think i will go ahead and get the G7. does anyone know if the other g series cameras are compatible with lens and fliter attachments? i think i will ask this question in a new post but figured i would ask here since this was already started.
thanks again for your reply

Hey, since you brought up the macro on the G7. would you suggest getting a macro with the attachment ring? Have you gotten any extra lenses or filters? if so how are you liking them with your camera?

One of my other hobbys is collecting dive watches and taking closeup pics of them for posting. So im happy very happy with macro abilitys. I bought this camera ease of transport. So for this camera I probably wont get any attachments.

thanks for your response Serafin. I got a good deal on a few lenses and filters that i think i will get for the price. its got a macro, a wide angle and a telephoto with the attachment mount and 3 filters for a lil over 100 so i feel obliged to jump on it. otherwise i really only was thinking of getting filters.
take care and thanks again for your reply.
