I use an fz5 now thats ok but i am looking for a pocket camera with great features and great photos. That may be subjective but a balance between lowlight capabilities and low noise and decent zoom is what i would love to have..any opinions? thank you

Pocket cam with great features ....that does not seem to happen....well I guess its what you call features.

Low light camera seems to favor the Fujis but a decent zoom is only the TZ1....That was easy.

I am also looking at the Fuji f30/f31fd or TZ1, and I was both overjoyed and dismayed to hear today (hadn't checked since Monday) that Panasonic released the TZ3 with all of the drawbacks (in my mind) of the TZ1 rectified (lens cover, scene modes, resolution bump, more), but that it won't be out until March!

I want to buy it now!

Actually, the new Tizzys won't be out till May. The FZ8 is expected in March. Also, I'm starting to think the TZ3 isn't as big an improvement as I first thought, unless you really want that wide angle 28mm. For my shooting tastes I'd rather keep my 350mm TZ1 than go to 280mm on the TZ3. The built-in lens cover is nice, but I can live without it.

I'm not making any comments about the reliability of the source, but Amazon.com says on their page for the TZ3:
"Availability: This item will be released on April 15, 2007. Pre-order now!. Ships from and sold by Amazon.com."
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-TZ3S-Digital-Optical-Stabilized/dp/B000MW3YEU/sr=8-3/qid=1170438352/ref=sr_1_3/103-2455401-0842241?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

I am interested in the wide-angle, but I'll have to think more about the limitation it puts on the far end of the zoom.

Do you find that the lens cover is not a big issue on the TZ1?

I started looking at pocket cams a few weeks ago for something smaller than my FZ-20 that I could carry everywhere with me. The camera I kept coming back to was the Canon PowerShot A710 IS. I planned on waiting for the price to drop before I made my purchase. Now here comes the Panasonic TZ3. I know I will wait for it to surface in March so that I can test it against the Canon. I sure like the AA battery capability in the canon though.:) Decisions.......... decisions:( What ever I do there will be a better camera in a few months, such is the nature electronics these days.

Ah, you may be right about the release date then. I remember reading somwhere it would be May, but who knows? Not having a built in lens cover doesn't bother me that much. My first digicam was a Nikon Coolpix 800 so I got used to it. Besides, not having it built in means one less mechanical gizmo on the camera to break.

For the record, the lens cap is not a big deal. I just wish Pana would upgrade to some really nice sensors. They are totally lacking in that department, but I still enjoy my TZ1.

Driving in France last summer, saw the arm drop over the road, warning of a coming train. Hit the brakes hard, jumped out of the car, and snapped the shot just as the fast-moving train was crossing the road. The TZ1, not needing to extend its lens at startup, is practically INSTANT ON. Any camera needing even a fraction of a second to uncover and extend its lens would miss this type of shot. That includes the TZ3, and the Fujis too, I think.

If you find that camera, let myself and the rest of the world know!

You wont find a compact "pocket" camera that is decent in low light and has good zoom. Oh, and the ISO, not realistic, sorry to say.

well i did get the f30 and its a sweet camera...for lowlight its wonderful....i did buy a tz1 at 179.99 from radio shack last week but havent opened it yet an decided to take it back to wait for the tz3...for on dp review.com some people have the tz2 and the high iso pics are pretty good with low noise... so it actually may be a vast improvement over the tz1...

I have decided to sell my fz5 black as i never use it...anyone know what i should ask? thank you

I also have been looking at the Canon A710, but the lack of a battery meter just pisses me off. I find it very very annoying for Canon to have these digi-cams with no battery meter. That was one of the reasons why I went with the TZ1.

A little bit off topic, but I like to know about how much juice is left in my cam. I know I can figure it out due to the amount of shots I have taken, but still, gimme that meter!

Since this camera uses AA and I have about 24 rechargeables around for kids toys I overlooked that small negative feature.:D

I'm currently in the process of doing just that, looking for a pocket cam that is smaller than my FZ20 but still gives me enough quality and flexibility that i don't feel too limited either. What did you decide to do in the end?

I put everything on hold for the TZ3 review from this websight. I may however forget that plan and move on and purchase one. The TZ1 has a very good price at Radio Shack right now (179.99) Most big box stores will do a price match - 10%.:D :D :D
