I am new to the forum and have a question on the Sony DSC W1. I have had mine for several months, but only started really using it heavily over the past several weeks. Most of my pictures are turning out relatively well (not as good as my Nikon N75), but I have noticed on several pictures a splotch towards the upper left hand side. This "splotch" does not occur on all the pictures.

I was wondering if anyone had run into this problem on the DSC W1 or other digital cameras and had any advice on how to correct it. I am worried I may have a bad CCD, although if that were the case I would expect to have the problem on every picture.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hello HArm 1,

I also have the DSC W1 and have used it for about 4 or 5 months now. Like you, and not on every picture, my camera will produce these splotches on the image. They look like dried water spots, generally circular but with irregular edges. I showed some of these splotches to a professional photographer I work with and he said it's probably the CCD (defective) that is causing this. But if defective why only selected pictures? I also e-mailed Sony about this and their response was that it probably needs service and that it was not possible to definitively diagnose through e-mail. I will most likely take or send the camera in for warranty repair. Let me know what you're going to do with your camera.

The splotches you are refering to are common among lots of digicams, sometimes they are perfectly round, sometimes mishaped, but usually roundish darks spots with a light border around them. They are esspecially common in low light situations w/ or w/out flash. I haven't seen your pics but I doubt that your problem is camera specific. If you really want to more info search "orbs" on Google. There are even some crazy supersticious folks who thinks they are some kind of spirit or something wierd like that. But no one really has an answer as to the technical explaination, just one of those technology phenomenons I guess. Check it out....

If the splotches are always circular with irregular edges and present only on photos taken indoors with a flash it's a good bet they are reflections caused by dust particles in the air.
