I have a Nikon D40 and would like to buy the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF lens. It won't auto focus on the D40. Does anyone have experience with manually focusing this lens? I have an active 10 month old that will be my main subject. Thanks!

I had it for a day, but returned it. It is easy to manual focus on the D40 (and gets sharper that way than using AF, IMO), but it just wasn't the focal length I need. I found myself backing up to get a shot with all 3 of my children in the frame. I'm saving up for the Sigma 30mm HSM instead.

Well as said by others, with moving subjects can be pretty hard (specially without a split screen), you also have the digital rangefinder -the camera tracks how your focusing if the camera agrees with you then a small green dot will appear in the viewfinder- but this won't guarantee success...
