Hey guys,

I'm here because I'm looking into getting a camera for Christmas. I have used a few different digital cameras, but I don't know a whole lot about them, so I came here to ask for recommendations! =)

I'll be primarily using this camera to take reference photos for artwork. This means that it has to have fairly good zoom, clarity, and resolution. However, I don't think I'll be using it for pure photography, so there's no need to go overboard :p Also, I will probably be taking many photos, so I need a method that lets me easy transfer the photos to my computer (compaq, window xp) and delete/retake pics on whatever storage it uses. The BIG limitation is that I don't have a whole lot of money, so I would like to get this camera for under $200, preferably $150 (yeah i know, i know, I can't get any really cool toys for this much, but that's how it goes).

MUCH MUCH thanks in advance, :D
Karen

I think that you can get a pretty good camera within your budget. I often find it amazing what you can buy these days for under $200. You can easily go to Wal-Mart and buy a Sony, Olympus, Nikon, or Fuji camera with zoom lens in your price range.

Since you didn't mention how large a picture you might need to print out, the best thing I could say would be to go to your local Wal-Mart and buy something in the 3 megapixel range, which would be a good starting point for most people. Given the fact that your stated needs are fairly ordinary, it really doesn't matter which camera you get at this price point. Just stay with a brand from a major manufacturer, and you will be fine. Keep in mind that you will most likely need some money for an extra memory card as well.

As for transfering photos to your computer - they all work the same. Hook up a cable, and either use included software to download, or just let your computer recognize the camera as another drive and put the pictures where you want. You can also purchase a separate card reader that hooks into your computer's usb port. You just remove the camera's memory card and insert it into the reader and then download.

Right now is a good time to buy a camera. I was in the local walmart yesterday and they had some good models on sale. Again, at your price point, it isn't worth the effort to worry about which brand of camera to get. Just don't get a Vivitar or Concord or similar. Stick with the names above and you will be fine.
