I would like to start progressing from a picture-taker to a photographer, and I am looking for resources that will help me start that process. I just got through looking at the National Geographic series of books on Amazon, most of which get hammered in their reviews as being so basic and simplistic they are useless.
Any websites, books, magazines or ancient stone tablets y'all recommend for becoming a better photographer?

I really like the various (more recent -- he's been writing for a long time) books by Michael Freeman. His recent books in the Lark Photography books series are excellent, although they suffer a bit from poor editing and some odd layout choices. (Much of the good information is in the photo captions in small print.) But that hangup aside, very well written and incredibly useful. ("Mastering Color Digital Photography" is one specific title...)
You might find the following helpful:
There is a free photo course on the web. If you do not want to enroll, you can just read the lessons. I read a few of the lessons. They are as good or better than some books.

good luck and enjoy.
