NewTekBuzz and I met up for the Detroit Auto Show today. We were hoping that shoeytennis would be able to join, but he wasn't able to at the time we were going to be there.

We came armed with with our bags, but before we dug into them we lubricated the creative juices at Hard Rock Detroit.

All shots are unedited and straight from the camera. I'll tell you why in a minute.

Tim at the table.

Ok, so here is why none of the photos are edited. We were just going to goto the show for the heck of it and take some snaps.

Then, Tim found this: http://www.naias.com/SubPage.aspx?id=1850

So we decided, what the heck...lets give it a shot. So, you should see some shots posted by him sometime soon too.

Anyway, the shots CAN NOT be edited. They have to be stright from the camera. Since I have been shooting manual mode, I think my exposures are getting a bit better.

Anyway, I need some help as to which you think are the best for each of the following categories:

Convertibles, Coupes and Sports Cars
Cutting Edge Concepts
Luxury
Coolest Close-up
Snapshots at the Show (I don't have any for this category)
and Black and WhiteI can have one entry per category.

All shot with the 30D, 17-40 or 15mm fisheye (borrowed from good friend).

17-40 - 19mm, ISO 800, f/7.1, 1/160
19220

17-40 - 19mm, ISO 800, f/6.3, 1,80
19221

Thats it for me. I took about 90 shots, but I thought these were my best overall since, for the contest, they can't be edited at all. I may have overused the tilt on a couple...but it was so easy to get carried away!!!

Tim took probably close to 150 or so. So he will probably have more to choose from.

Thanks for your input everyone!!

Jeff

JMWallace, What fishey lens were you using for the events? Was it the Sigma or the Canon?

BTW, why did you choose to use fisheye instead of wide-angle?

Jeff - most of the car shots are great. You've got a really good eye. The one thing that always kills car show photos in my opinion is it's often to just get the car without hoards of people surrounding it ruining the shot. So either the show was slow - or Tim scared everyone away for you! Good job! ;)

It was the Canon. I used both the 17-40 and 15mm fisheye. I shot for a while with the 17-40 then let Tim use it for awhile. Why did I use it so much...well...it was a (borrowed) new toy and it produced the most interesting shots I suppose. In a lot of cases, it was really hard to get close enough to make it look REALLY warped. That lens is a BLAST!

JMW - these are great.

Although I think you made it harder for yourselves than you needed it to be. The rules say no retouching but conversion from a RAW file (and one would assume normal RAW editing tools) are OK as far as I understand the rules.

Thanks a lot for the compliment. This was REALLY fun!!! Going with a fellow DCRP'er made it even better! For the contest, the did allow special access to photogs only at 8am...but there was NO WAY I was getting there that early. It was pretty slow and, of course, the close-ups helped hide the crowd...but Tim is pretty ScArEy!

...most of the car shots are great. C'mon...you can be harder on me than that!

Thanks CW! But I'm (still) only working on a laptop here. Hows the exposure?

Now that you say that, you may have found a loop-hole!! But I shot in .jpg. Honestly, if shot in RAW, then corrected and converted to .jpg, would they really be able to tell??

I agree. I think they just mean don't go nuts and photoCHOP 'em. There would be nothing wrong with shooting RAW and making that image look its best.

Here are a few from me.

You can find JMW in #4, I dont think he could get any closer with that fish eye.

I think I like #5 the best and will prob. be the one I send in for the contest.

All the pics are really compressed, sorry. not sure how to space the pics out or add numbers between them... help!?!

Enjoy
