I sent out an email to the people that run the local velodrome asking what their policy was in regards to amateur photographers
This is the response
Thank you for your email.
We welcome photographers to come down to any or all of our events at
DISC.
All I ask in return is that we have access to use your photos on our
website or in publications should we feel the need. (You can supply on
a CD for example after each event.) We will of course provide credit to
you where ever the photos may be used.
This weekend we have the Senior Track Championships from Friday night -
Sunday afternoon if you are interested. Please let me know and I will
arrange for a pass and access to the infield.
Looks like I am shooting velodrome racing this weekend:cool:  :D

That's cool as long as you don't mind them using 'em free. One thing though is make sure they don't think they take ownership of the pics. That would mean you no longer have rights to them.

True, its a tough one not so much for the fact that at the moment I am just happy to get a pass to the infield, but for the precedence it sets. At the moment I am just starting out and would be glad to get some pics out there with out being paid, but later on how would I transition to getting a couple of bucks out of it. Not trying to be greedy:D

Congrats! I'm sort of going through that transition right now with my concert stuff. I usually givem' away but I was asked how much it would cost for a full sized copy and I had no idea what to say. It's not like I can compare prices at Wal-Mart. I'm no buisness man. :o
good luck though it should be a lot of fun!

After you've ripped your photos to your harddrive and are finished rating your images - dump all the low rating and "delete" ratings to a CD or two and no harm done! ;) Its a win-win!:D

Mate, I reckon they've given a brilliant response. Access to the area, psuedo "accreditation"....what more could you want. :)
I'm sure you see this as a great opportunity to experiment and grade your own capabilities. Nothing wrong with them wanting to view the photos....and maybe even use them in future publications.....perhaps with your name under the photos as the photographer.
If you are like me, sometimes you just want to see what you can achieve with the camera and enjoy someone elses appreciation of them. Afterall, is that not why we post our photos on this forum.
How this progresses in time, is a diferent story.
Conversely, and I apologise if it deviates slightly from your original topic, No.3 Son commences school for the first time this year. I'm sure that at some stage I will want to capture his first sporting efforts during a school athletics/swimming carnival. With stories you hear about in the media, changing public perception like you have encountered in local parks....the ability to do this is now questionable.
If I get any crap from the school or council authority when the time arises.....I'm not going to be happy

Way to go Man!
A great way to build a portfolio. Win/win here.
I know in theory we should all stand our ground and charge for images in an example like this, but it's sooooo hard to get anywhere like this.
I have exactly the same example for V8 Supercars this year: met a motoring editor in the crowd, we got talking, showed him some stuff, he gave me his card and said to send him some work. He has now offered to get me accreditation for most of the events this year in return for limited free useage of images for his main client.
It's against my better judgement, but stuff like this opens up many doors that lead to bigger things. I know it dilutes the value of photographers to the industry (and is in a sense counter-productive to my goals), but how else do you get anywhere?
Without tear-sheets and examples of published work, most agencies won't even look at you for paid sports work.
I mean you could take the high ground and remain very idle hoping someone does it your way while your competitors pass you by. A tough one I know - fair argument for both sides, but I'm taking the low road. :o

Yeh, I hear you ceedub, how many people have been picked up from just having a great portfolio that someone stumbles upon.
I am sure the official photogs for most things gave away some pics here and there to get some toe through the door

Public or Private school? Reason I ask is that I haven't had any problems taking pictures of any of my kids' events at their school (which is Catholic), but my Mum says otherwise about the Public schools (she's a teacher).
As far as I can tell, there is an Education Department policy against photography at your typical sports carnival - but I'm pretty sure it isn't worth much in the eyes of the law, as it goes against all the rules of being able to take photos of anyone (with a few minor exceptions) in a public place.
Which means the teachers will probably challenge you (citing Dept 'rules'), but you will have the law on your side - it could get ugly.
It might be worth downloading the Photographer's Rights sheet from Nemeth and forwarding a copy to your school principle so you can have this conversation well beforehand, rather than have an ugly situation occur in the middle of the event.

I agree with having the conversation beforehand, it will save alot of drama later.
The whole reason why I sent the email at the start of this thread was so I could stop the obligitory over zealous official at the velodrome.

How about hiring something special for the event? 135/2? 70-200/2.8?

I thought about that, but I will just hit this one with what I have and see what FL works etc
When you do V8's and MotoGP do you use AF servo with all points active or just centre?
Got any other tips:p

Just single AF, but I toggle the point on the fly depending on what I'm composing. Too many points slows down the camera and is less precise IMO.
Maybe Tv and play with some different speeds - I'd even be tempted to do some freaky wide-angle panning at really low speeds just for kicks (if you can get close to them).
Choose an ISO that give you the DoF you want for the shutter speed.
Enjoy.

Not exactly the hihest of bars for which to reach. The 'action' shots are a bit P&S (all flash) - the podium shots are good though.
This is good, you should eat these for breakfast.
Edit: Russell's stuff is good, but Amy's are very basic.

I agree that this is a win win. You get to experiment and shoot however you like without any pressure of having to produce enough good shots. In fact there's no pressure to produce anything (but I'm sure you will have some great shots in the end). Letting them use the shots on their website IMO is worth the experience and practice. Have fun mate! Post your results, I'm sure we would all love to have a look.

It's a Public School. I haven't had a problem yet.....but it just seems to be the way we are heading....so I'm already getting on the defensive :o .
Thanks for the link.....and the advice. I must admit that my initial reaction would have been "no photos" then "no participation by my child". Probably not the correct response....but it's how I feel. As the article in the link said, it's not right for photographers to automatically be treated as perverts  .
It does bring back memories of a little mishap that I had a few years back at No.1 Son's High School (he was about 15yrs at the time :) ).
He had been pestering me about coming down to the school to watch him play Oz-Tag during school sport. Well one week I was working from home so thought I would do the Fatherly thing. When I got there, the game had started so I jumped the fence of the park that adjoins the school (only about 1m high) and stood on the sideline watching. After about 10mins, I was getting a bit warm in the sun so I walked further around the field so that I could stand under the shade of some trees........that was my big mistake
Took about 2 minutes for one of the teachers to come running across the field to grab the pervert "hiding" in amongst the trees. (I'm real glad I didn't have my hands in my pockets at the time :D ).
Anyway, I was taken over to the School Office by my "new friend" and had to sign in and get a visitors badge....and instructed on correct protocol for visiting my Son at school :(

It appears we're both singing from the same hymn sheet. I haven't had any confontations yet - but I fully expect that to happen some time - which is why I know my rights back to front and carry a copy of Nemeth's abridged version in my camera bag.

True!
So as I understand it,
So legally where are you NOT allowed to take pics
1) Where individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy (eg; toilets, their home).
2) Government security installations.
3) Children with a protection order over them.
That's about it.
