I would say you are best off getting a speedlight as they talk to the camera well as they are designed for each other, I have just got myself a 430EX and so far so good

Just as a point of fact, the Canon 580EX Speedlight will provide a FULL f-stop more flash than the 430EX.
In other words, where the 430EX will pop for f/11 at eight feet
the 580EX pops for f/16 ... been there, done that. You get what you pay for.

Hardly ever for me. The 430 is more than enough for general use.

And I wonder how many 580ex's have been maxed out distance wise WITHOUT FEC??

I wound up using it just yesterday (1/14/2007), for an Eagle Court of Honor held in a large church.
A hundred feet of distance between me, the EOS 20D w/ EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM and the subject. It was actually kind of nice having a brilliant enough "pop" to actually light something more than a closet.
Having enough ambient light for the corners didn't hurt. either.

When you need that punch, the 580EX is a tremendous tool.

I just (today) got the rather expensive AF-540FGZ for no good reason :-) The funny thing is I hardly use flash. LOL. But I wanted a good one, anyway. It rotates as well as tilts which I though was useful for say, bouncing off a wall instead of ceiling for portraits. I also have the bigger Sigma 18-50 to rise above if I don't want shadows in a straight shot. It also seems to have way more capability than I will ever learn, need or use. I plan on finding ways to use it on occasion in the future, however.
I think I'm really done buying, except for a replacement someday in the distant future for the 70-300...
Of course this will not work for you Canon users, but the point is I went for the top though I'm at the bottom right now.
