I just got the new canon rebel xti, and i switched it from AF to MF, and well it wont go back, i have tried moving the switch (duh!) and re-setting all my controls.. no luck! anyone know how!?! I think i am going to go crazy!
could it be a problem within the cam that i cant control?

Are you saying the switch itself doesn't move? What's going on exactly?

Have you got another lens? Try that lens
If not then I would take it back

So when you push the shutter button halfway down....is there any response (movement) from the lens at all ?

Does the switch move all the way over to AF?
I rekon you need to gently turn the focus ring by hand as you try and slide the switch over to AF.
Having said that I would still take it back as it doesnt seem to be working as it should

Sounds like a crappy 18-55mm to me. I have one of these "Cracker Jack-prizes" in my inventory  and I would be surprised to hear that another lens did the same thing.
Abandon that piece of ... and just get a lens worth shooting with and through. I won't make any recommendations, because just about anything is better. Open your B&H catalog to the lensing section, close your eyes and place your finger on the page. Whatever is under your digit has to be better than the "kit lens".

Cracker-jack or not, it should work properly. It's new right? Return it or warranty it.
And for the record, I've taken thousands of photos with my kit lens, enlarged some to 24X36, and am happy with all of them. After the 50 1.8, it's the best $90 I've spent on a lens. Then there's my favorite lens, the 28-105 3.5-4.5. Paid a whopping $220 for that one.
