You won't regret it mate! (you aussies are rubbn' off, eh!) I just use regular alke. If I'm goin' somewere important I'll splerge and get some lithium batteries. Some day I'll get a few sets of rechargables but so far I have not felt the need.
It's so fun to use. It brings new life to old lens! Oh, and the AF beam is great! I asume it's the 430 EX right?

Yeh, 430, dont see the need at the moment for the 580. Plus I dont have the $$$ for one of them right now

Congrats Porno! I use Duracell 2650mAh NiMH's in my flash units. Just get something with a high mAh rating since that indicates the size of the battery's gas tank so to speak. Higher mAh = longer duration. I may be wrong but I believe 2700mAh is currently the highest rating available.

I've never used the 580 but, I've never felt like I've been missing something with the 430. I think if I ever set up a "studio" in my new house I'll just get a 580 to trigger the 430. But I have absolutely no regrets with my 430.

Cheers guys, going to pick up tomorrow:D
PS I heard a whisper some place that Li-ion or NMh has better recycle properties but I cant remember which

Congrats Forno....wondered when you would be updating your signature.
For my Sunpak Flash I use NiMH batteries from Tricky Dicky.
They are rated at 2200mAh.....Orange in colour with a blue stripe at one end.

NiMh recycle faster than Alkaline. But I don't know about Lithiums. Lithiums are expensive and not reusable so I stay away from those. Although there may be Li-Ion rechargeables similar to the ones in the cameras themselves. I haven't checked on that.

2 580EXs and a Sunpak 383 Super (recent purchase). If you count my father's Focal (Kmart) M500TS then I have 4. It's on indefinite loan. :p
A friend has 430EX and 580EX. She opts for the 430 most often. Said it recycles much faster, albiet less powerful.
The reduced power is nearly always fine since she's usually using fast glass.
Batteries: I only use Alkaline as a backup - slower recycle. The "Digital Alkaline" ones supposedly recycle faster than the regular ones.
The rechargables also last a lot longer.

Actually if you're shooting the exact same shot, the 580 will recycle faster because it used less of it's total capacity...and even faster still if you put it in "rapid mode."

Damn, that's a hell of a lot of batteries Don. I use Energizer 2500mah...2 sets of 4. I need to buy another set or 2 for the wedding this month. Thanks forno for letting us know the price of them at myer, didn't know they were that cheap. Or is it a sale on at the moment? Oh btw lithiums recharge slower than NiMH...don't know exactly why but it's something to do with the chemistry of the cells inside. They're longer lasting but slower recharge.

Which batteries are you referring to Vich? If you're asking whether NiMH batteries recharge faster than lithium AA's then the answer is yes. I think alkalines and NiMH have about the same recharge time in a flash.

An excellent choice Gontran, you know it wasn't that long ago when the 430EZ was the top-of-the-line Canon flash. I don't think you'll have a power problem.
And just for the record, I use Energizer Lithiums mostly - they seem to work OK.

i have a ton of those energizer 2700mah rechargeables...but i use them for everything, my 580ex, my sony p&s, remotes, whatever. i don't plan on buying more batteries for a long time.
and i have one of those chargers that do either AA or AAA.
