I've found a couple of listings on eBay for lenses that I'm interested in, but noticed that most of them are the style that have the aperture ring. Will these lenses work with my D40? It seems like I remember reading somewhere that this is the beauty of the Nikkor lenses, that the only compatibility issue with older lenses has to do with the AF-S issue, or the lack thereof. I'm thinking about getting the 2.8 70-200 without VR and save a little bit of money. I'll be using it to shoot cheerleading (football & basketball) at higher shutter speeds, so my thought is, that the VR would not be a benefit at those speeds. Is my thinking correct? Thanks a bunch.

Cheers, :D

The non VR version wont auto focus on the D40, there are a few other threads here that have a complete list of Nikon and Sigma lenses that are compatible.
