Thats a great lens and is one every Nikon owner should have. Its a steal at around $100. Its very sharp and crisp and focuses very fast. As for close up pictures, what exactly do you mean? Its not a macro lens, its more of a portrait lens.

At around $100, why not?

EDIT* What camera do you currently have or plan to get?

Ricky,
This is a lens that is a no-brainer, but as Jason said it is not a macro, which is the impression I am getting from your other posts that you might be looking for.

It all depends on the OP's needs, if he/she is looking for a macro, then maybe something else would be benefitial.

i dont have the camera yet i just bought it on ebay, its a nikon d50. it comes with the kit lens, but i figure i should start looking for more lenses.

what would be the best lens to shoot cars at car shows and stuff like that?

I would suggest shooting with the kit lens for now to see exactly what range you like to shoot. Its better to wait and buy a lens youll need and use as apposed to throwing money down on a lens now that you wont need.
