Just wondering besides putting black tape over your camera's model number, what other ways do you use to prevent people from:
-Peering at your camera's front at the top right to try to see which model you're using (This happened to me at the park the other day)
-Attempting to mug you because you're carrying the latest equipment or
-saying "that's an old model!" in events like weddings
-Etc?
Any other things like this you all do to your digital SLR and why?

Put masking tape over the badge and write 'Polaroid'. :p
Honestly, why worry about it.
If they're looking to mug you. I don't think they'd care if it was a Rebel or a 1Ds mkII.
Doubt most muggers would know the difference if they have to look that close.

I was a bit paranoid about being mugged - watched too many crime watch progs! I feel more confident now i'm insured though. I agree with RebelRat though, i can't imagine a mugger would know the difference between cameras. SLR's and/or the lenses just look expensive in general

if you have seen a taped camera
it could be just a streetshooter looking for some anonymity
personally i have doubts that it works
but the claim is they are less obvious or threatening
i had a guy try to take my kit from my shoulder once
he gave me a huge hit in the ear and grabbed the bag by the sling and tried to take it from my shoulder
it took me a few seconds to react, having first put my hand on my ear
the bag was open and bits of gear began to hit the pavement
on trying to hold the bag by the sling with one hand
and rescue a 300mm lens from falling out with the other
i decided to end the worst of the attack, pulled him toward me with the sling and clubbed him across the jaw with the 300mm
well what the hell, it was a soligor anyways
i vacated the premises post-haste
i think theyre still trying to wake him up

I'd like to see the mugger who's gonna run away with my camera bag. ;)
Flattened a couple with my monopod once in an inner city car park.

I love that Aussie street justice. Try that here in the states and you turn into the criminal, then you'll be facing lawsuits. The only rights left here are for the criminals.

I thought that was only in the movies?
But hey you guys get to carry guns - maybe the hoods need protecting from the trigger-happy? :D

Can not carry a gun in my state, well legally.
Gun laws are so effective, that is why Washington DC is so crime free, you can not even own a gun in our capitol.
What would be the best piece of photo equipment to carry to protect ourselves from would be thugs? Big primes and monopods seem to do the trick.

i got my manfrotto monopod open the release so it locks open and you got a pretty good weapon you can own someone trying to take your stuff and not have to worry about you monopod bending since its a manfrotto
i decided to end the worst of the attack, pulled him toward me with the sling and clubbed him across the jaw with the 300mm
Good for you!

Well, I haven't seen anyone staring at me wanting to mug me or something yet. So far, I've been receiving positive comments from the public like "nice camera". Without the black tape over the "EOS 30D", I'm wondering if I would have received "doesn't the [insert 10 MP entry-level dSLR here] have more megapixels than yours.. means thats *better*" :p
