This is a weird one but here it goes. I've seen Digital Rebels and Kisses in black and silver but how come I haven't stumbled across any silver 300D, 350D or 400D cameras (only black)? Do silver x00D models exist?

I've held my friend's Rebel XT and the grip sucks IMO. On the other hand, my 30D is quite big and needs a whole bag for it plus a lens. I'm looking at the Rebel XTi/400D as a possible 2nd body I can pick up for bring-anywhere shooting. I guess I'll have to bear with the ergonomics if I want a portable Canon dSLR :( .

The kind of shooting that I want to do with the XTi are casual shooting (no need for a bulky brick), candid shots, unsafe parts of town/very crowded places like conventions or weekend crowds in malls (thus the need for a small but capable camera, preferably in "cheap" silver;) ) and marathons where I'll be one of the participants (marathon + sightseeing:p ).

Is the Rebel XTi body compact enough to be put away in larger pants pockets like khakis or sweatpants without a hustle or significant buldge? I'm planning to use something small like the 50mm f1.8 put into another pocket.

Not really. The xt is small and sexy for a dslr but it's not what i'd consider pocketable. You might could stuff it into a larger jacket pocket with a 50mm f/1.8 attached but even then it would definately look like you stole something.

There's a picture that gives you a pretty good idea of how big it is in the hand (the 50mm f/1.8 is about the same size as the 1.4.) I'd say it would be awkwardly pocketable if you took the lens off and put a body cap on it and kept the lens in a different pocket (assuming your pants are rather baggy.)

As far as the silver thing goes... i have no idea... i did a little searching and can't seem to find a silver 400d either. Good luck.

The problem with taking it apart though is that by the time you re-assemble it you might have already missed the shot.... something to keep in mind depending on what you intend on shooting.

The 300D is a Digital Rebel. The 350D is a Digital Rebel XT. The 400D is a Digital Rebel XTi.

Compact and dSLR don't go together. No matter how small the body is, you still need lenses. You might want to just get a compact P&S for those times, and live with the limitations.

Gee, I never knew 400D's existed in silver (I knew about the XTi and Kisses though. Same camera, different names in different places.). I checked out the measurements and figured that one of my film cameras was about the same size. I attempted to stuff it into those pockets mentioned without any lens and it just got stuck halfway through:o .

Ah well, so much for trying, thanks everyone. Now back to P&S  for those marathon and bring everywhere shots... at least I don't need to get a 2nd body now (thinks: more lenses  )

I'm contemplating a P&S myself. They're cheaper and I tend to think of those "go anywhere" shots to be not as demanding so the need for fast FPS, high ISO, etc isn't really necessary. If it is, make a point to take the dSLR and right glass for the job. Ya know?
