What would be the first lense to buy for the D40? and where should I buy from? I was thinking either a wide angled lens or macro lense.

What do you currently have, and what do you want to shoot?

Since Macro and Wide don't really show up in the same lens, and you haven't mentioned a budget... One macro option that would also make a good portrait lens would be the Nikon 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor - at least it would be dual purpose.

Im not really sure what I would like to shoot. Right now I just have the kit lens. Like you said I am on a budget, so I just want something that would expand my objects to shoot. I think a wide angle lens would be cool to shoot buildings and architecture. Is there any particular online store that you guys use?

I was at the camera shop the other day and I look at the new Nikkor 18-135mm lense. The guy behind the counter said a few people are mounting them up to the D40 with good results.

I hooked it up to their test D50 and it was a pretty nice piece of equipment. Focused fast, took a good picture, and was lightweight. One of the advantages of the D40 is how light it is and this lense isn't too terribly plump so it'll keep the weight of the entire package down. Also it has the auto-focus motor inside the lense so it'll work well properly with your D40. I'd say if you are looking for a little bit more in a lense, take a look at this.

I'd say take a gander at this. Any local camera shop should have these in stock, so you can start looking at them immediately.

K1W1 has a great resource list thanks for sharing it! remember that only the lenses on that list will work in Autofocus mode with the D40.

As for where to buy them, if you live in the USA I can recommend B&H www.bhphotovideo.com super reputable dealer in the US, and KEH www.keh.com reputable used equipment dealer in the US, both places won't scam you and their used department has a great devolution policy! also they will honor any warranty issue fast and in a reliably way.

Enjoy your camera a lot.
